Obituary

Hugh John 'œHughie' Ehrsam, 81, of Toledo,, passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg. Hughie was born on October 22, 1930, in Toledo, Ohio to Clarence and Mildred (Carroll) Ehrsam. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1949, where he excelled in sports. Hughie was a veteran of the US Air Force. On July 13, 1957, he married Florence LaPorte. He was employed with Libbey Owens Ford for 30 years retiring in 1988. He was a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Maumee, where he helped found the athletic program. Hughie was member of the Notre Dame Traveling Squad and a past president of the Central Catholic Alumni. He was a volunteer with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and a member of the Maumee Elks Lodge. Hughie leaves behind his loving wife of 55 years, Florence; children, Denise (John) Bilek, Kelly (Marlene) Ehrsam, and Chris (Bob) Porter; grandchildren, Brianne and Kaylyn Porter; Angelica, E.J., and Rylee Ehrsam; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Materny; along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Rosemary (Clarence) Leopold. Hughie donated his body to the University of Toledo Medical Center. A memorial mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 3, 2012, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Maumee, Ohio, said by Rev. James Halleron. Expressions of sympathy may be directed to Hospice of NW Ohio, Central Catholic High School, or St. Joseph Catholic Church, Maumee. The family would like to thank Drs. Mark Gallagher and John McGreevy along with staff of Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their kind and loving care.
