Obituary

Irene J. Papp, 85, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away October 26, 2008, in her home. She was born in Toledo, Ohio on April 10, 1923, to Andrew and Mary (Kiraly) Dandar. Irene attended Birmingham School and graduated from Waite High School in 1941. On May 3, 1947, she married Joseph Papp who preceded her in death in 1979. After marrying Joe and raising a family, she returned to Birmingham School as a Toledo Public School employee, working as a classroom and reading aid retiring in 1984. She was a lifelong member of St. Michaels Byzantine Church where she followed in her father's footsteps as a cantor for over 30 years. Irene also, for over 35 years, continued her mother's tradition of baking the communion bread for the church. She also volunteered at bingo. She was an excellent cook and baker of Hungarian food. She loved gardening, canning and freezing her fresh vegetables with her children. Church, family and gardening were her life. She also was an avid reader. Surviving are her children, Joseph (Jean) Papp, Jan (Mike) Sparks, Susan (Tom) Karsiotis; grandchildren, Brad and Michelle Papp, Jarrid, Jeremy and Jason Sparks, Nicholas and Susanne Karsiotis; brother, Mike (Rose) Dandar; sisters, Ann Richter, Helen Butler, both of Florida; sister-in-law, Sue (Joe) Novak. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Irene was also preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Joe Papp; brothers, Steven, Andrew and John Dandar; sister, Mary Duricek. Friends and family may visit at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Rd., on Thursday, October 30, 2008 from 2-9 p.m. with a Panachida prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will begin in the funeral home with prayers on Friday at 10:00 a.m. and continue to St. Michaels Byzantine Church, 4001 Navarre Ave., Oregon, OH, for Divine Liturgy of Christian Burial Services at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in North Oregon Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy in Irene's memory can be made to St. Michael's Byzantine Church or to her family to distribute among Irene's favorite charities. Visitation: Thursday, 2-9 p.m. Services: Friday, 10:30 a.m.
