Irene M. Walker, 81, of Oregon, Ohio, passed away Saturday, June 6, 2015 with her daughter Peggy by her side. Irene was born in Toledo, Ohio on February 3, 1934 to Ralph and Mabel Culler. Irene persevered through a very difficult life that presented unimaginable hardships; she responded with amazing dignity and courage and never complained. Her life changed when she married the love of her life, United States Naval Officer Johnny Walker. Irene was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved preparing family dinners, and there were many. When summer came, so did the annual Hobo Dinner and swimming party. She invited every family member, friend and neighbor she knew. Everyone left full, tired, sunburned and counting the days to next year. She made sure to capture every moment with her camera. Irene was an angel who devoted her time to care for many others. For years, she looked after the children of working parents as if they were her own. She was a nurse's aide for 25 years at the Lutheran Home on North Wheeling in Toledo. In spite of retiring from that profession almost 20 years ago, she never took off her nurse's aide hat. She helped others even after she was confined to a wheelchair. She was full of energy and willing to embark on anything her family threw at her. Whether it was camping in a pup tent, riding in a golf cart parade at Sunny's Campground, or riding a bicycle with her grandchildren, she was ready, willing and able. And boy, did she love to dance! She was a Pittsburgh Steelers fan and an avid NASCAR enthusiast, cheering on Jeff Gordon. Irene was a true Elvis fan. She had a collection of his memorabilia at home. Whenever the family saw Elvis stuff anywhere else, we always thought of her. When her daughter Lisa offered her the opportunity to take a vacation anywhere she wanted, of course she picked Memphis. Even their trip to Hawaii could not top Graceland. Irene loved her church. She professed a deep faith and trust in Jesus Christ for His saving grace.
She is survived by her loving children, Lisa (Rick) Jurski, Debbie (Frank) Mrkva, Keith (Sonya) Walker, Peggy (Christopher) Peters; sister, Dorothy Culler; grandchildren, Ricky, Tracy, Shannon, Crystal, Justin, Blaine, Christian, Steve, Larissa, Stephanie and Jr. and 7 great-grandchildren, many of whom she helped raise while their parents were off at work. Thank you Mom & Grama – we could not have done it without you. Irene was preceded in death by her parents and her one true love, Johnny Walker.
