J. Benjamin "Ben" Searle, 89, of Toledo and formerly of Sun City Center, FL, passed away June 12, 2005, in Flower Hospital. He was born in DuBois, PA to John and Mary (Jury) Searle on February 9, 1916. Ben served during World War II with the Navy Seabees serving in the Pacific. He retired from the McDowell-Wellman Engineering Company after 34 years of service. Through the years, he was a project superintendent for many major construction jobs having worked on every continent except Antarctica. Ben worked on many area construction projects including the Craig Memorial Bridge, CSX Coal Handling Facilities, Detroit Edison Monroe Power Plant and I-75 DiSalle Bridge. Ben was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Sun City Center, FL where was named man of the year in 1988 for his charitable work. He was a 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite, a member of the Shriner's Egypt Temple, Tampa, FL, and a member of Iron Workers Local 55, Toledo. Ben was an avid crossword puzzle solver.
Surviving are his sons, J. Edward (Jackie) Neumann, Tucson, AZ, J. Michael (Marlene) Searle of Oregon, OH; grandchildren, Michael Neumann, Phoenix, AZ, Katie (Eric) Sabel, Lafayette, IN, and J. Benjamin Searle II, Oregon, OH; great-grandchildren, Abbi and Ella Sabel; sisters, Anna Mefford and Harriet (Duncan) Wallace, both of Michigan, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Dick and Dan Searle and sisters, Elizabeth Falvo and Virginia Rzesutock.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 16, 2005 from 2-9 p.m. at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road at Starr Ave. Interment will be at the Morningside Cemetery, Dubois, PA. Expressions of sympathy in Ben's memory can be made to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
