Jack Billings, 84, of Oregon, OH, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, September 13, 2008. Jack was born in Toledo, Ohio on September 11, 1924.
A graduate of Clay High School, Jack was a medic in World War II where he earned a purple heart and a bronze star. He was a member of Paragon Lodge No. 788 F & AM. He was an member of VFW Posts 9816 were he served as past commander and chaplain. He was also a member of VFW Post 9963 and Christ Dunberger American Legion Post 537. Jack worked at Western Southern Life Insurance Company, Buckeye Brewery and the City of Oregon Water Department where he retired in 1985.
He married Catherine Pappas on November 27, 1943 in Toledo, Ohio. They were married 63 years before she preceded him in death on October 19, 2007. Also preceding him in death are son Thomas Billings, brothers Robert Billings, Dr. Donald Billings and Jim Purcell.
He is survived by his children, Cathy (Ken) DeWitt, Jack (Janice) Billings, Kelly (Brian) Dennen, Kristi (Scott) Schmidt; grandchildren, KJ (Angie) DeWitt, Tracy (Brian) Szymczak, Justin and Ashton Dennen and Autumn Schmidt; great grandchildren, Bo and Ty Szymczak and Zack and Maisy DeWitt. Step grandchildren, Angie (Craig) Ackerman, Dr. Nichole (Joel) Barcalow. Step great grandchildren, Arianna and Ava Ackerman and Dane Barcalow. Visitation will be held at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Rd. Oregon, OH, on Monday from 2-8 p.m. American Legion services will be conducted at 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 10:30 am in First St. John Lutheran Church, 2471 Seaman Road. Interment will follow in St. John Cemetery. Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy in Jacks memory are asked to consider Hospice of Northwest Ohio or First St. John Lutheran Church.
