Obituary

James "Jim" McDaniel passed away peacefully at home in Millbury, Ohio, under the loving care of Marcia (Jurek), his wife of 63 years, and his three sons, Thomas (Denise), Neal, and Keith (Melissa). He was the proud grandfather of six grandchildren: Alexis (Travis) Tucker, Derek (Heather) McDaniel, Ian, Evan, Amelie, and Elliot McDaniel. Jim was also a great-grandfather to Reagan and Karsyn Tucker.

He is survived by his brother, William McDaniel, and his sister, Jacqueline (Gene) Bell. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Olen "Virgil" McDaniel and Agnes Gadus, as well as his brother, David McDaniel, and sister, Barbara Mascsak.

After graduating from Central Catholic High School in 1957, Jim began his career in design, moving from Toledo's Eastside to Canton, Ohio, to work as a window dresser at a downtown men's clothier. He later returned to Toledo to marry Marcia (CCHS Class of 1958), join the Marine Corps Reserve, and establish himself as a graphic artist specializing in container and packaging graphics at Owens-Illinois where he worked for 30 years followed by 13 years at Dynamic Dies Inc.—all while raising a family.

An avid fisherman and wooden boat enthusiast with an eye for craftsmanship in everything he did, Jim was the proud owner of Old Smuggler, a classic Lyman boat built in 1973. He and his wife shared sunny days at Catawba Island, enjoying boating, fishing, and being active residents of the Skyline View Estates community. As a CYO basketball player in his youth, Jim continued to enjoy watching sports, especially college basketball and the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Guardians baseball. He encouraged and supported his sons in a variety of sports and undertakings, teaching them the importance of individual achievement, being part of a team, and giving their best effort in all things—win or lose.

As his family makes thoughtful arrangements for his remembrance ceremony and the eventual interment of his ashes at Catawba Island Cemetery, friends and loved ones are invited to celebrate his life through acts of kindness and support for others. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in his name to St. Jerome Church, 300 Warner St., Walbridge, Ohio, 43465.

Jim's spirit of care, craftsmanship, and devotion to family continues to inspire those who knew him. His memory lives on through stories shared by loved ones, the daily joys of life, and the warmth of sunny days spent on the water.

The family extends their gratitude to friends and loved ones for their support during this time. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Millbury Chapel is assisting the family.
