With his loving family by his side, James "JP" William Papenfuss, 69, of Graytown, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at ProMedica Toledo Hospital after complications from a surgical procedure. JP, affectionately known to many, was born in Toledo, Ohio on November 30, 1955, to William Clarence and Mary Louise (Parker) Papenfuss, who preceded JP in death as well as his brother Kirk Papenfuss and his in-laws Skip and Florence Briggs.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Wendy J. (Briggs); daughters, Amanda (Chad) Stefko and Beth (Danny) Alexander. Papa's grandchildren, who were his pride and joy and who will proudly continue his legacy; Phoenix and Salem Stefko, Parker, Presley, and Perry Hartup, and Paxton Alexander. Sisters, who affectionately called him "Jimmy"; Deb (Mike) Ladd, Barb Lynn, Kim Bensman, and Sharon (Jack) VanEtten.
Jim was a 1974 graduate of Woodward High School. JP had worked for the City of Toledo for 32 years. After retiring, he then went on to work for Detwiler Golf Course, and then Benton Township for 8 years. During his years of employment, JP formed many lifelong friendships.
Jim loved spending time maintaining his beautiful yard, wintering in Madeira Beach, Florida with Wendy, conquering a White Mountain puzzle in record time, making Christmas a winter wonderland for the grand kids, buying his weekly KENO ticket, enjoying a cold Busch Light with friends, and, last but not least, cheering on The Ohio State University football team "O-H!"
JP's family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to family and friends for keeping them in their thoughts and prayers during this very difficult and unexpected time. Special thanks to ProMedica Toledo Hospital HVICU staff- Brittany, Dempsey, and Emily (his R.N. angels) and all the critical care team including physicians and surgeons.
