Obituary

Jane Marie (nee Kamke) Kuebbeler Meinert passed away September 3, 2012 at Swan Creek Retirement Village. The life-long Toledo resident was a pioneer in local education and politics. She died of natural causes at age 99. Jane Marie Kamke was born in Toledo to Clara and William Kamke on November 29, 1912. Eight years later, her brother, William was born. Jane lived her whole life in Toledo graduating from Scott High School and Toledo University in the field of Education. While attending a University dance at TU, she met Rollin Kuebbeler who was the athletic doctor for TU. Jane taught one year at Gibsonburg High School before marrying Rollin in 1934. She became his office manager for his general medical practice. Throughout Jane'™s life, she was very involved in her church and her faith which was a major guide for her life. She was a Sunday school teacher for teenage classes for 25 years. Jane had a gift for music and played the piano and sang in the church choir along with being a church deacon and elder at Eastminster Presbyterian Church. Jane was the first woman to chair a committee in the Maumee Valley Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church and served on the National Board of Christian Education for the Presbyterian Church. During the 1950s and 1960s, Jane became active in politics serving as the first woman President on the Toledo Board of Education as well as the first woman elected to the Toledo City Council. She ran for the U.S. House of Representitives against Lud Ashley in 1966 losing in a hard fought campaign. After Dr. Rollin Kuebbeler died in 1972, Jane married longtime friend, Kermit Meinert, who owned and operated the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home. They split their residence between Toledo and Sarasota, Florida. She enjoyed golfing, music and was a long time bridge player. In 2003, after the death of her second husband, she moved into Swan Creek Retirement Village. There she became active on the worship committee and played the piano for church services and other activities. She would have been 100 years old in November 2012. Jane was awarded various honors during her life and they include honorary member of Delta Kappa Gamma and Phi Kappa Phi. She was named outstanding Woman of the Week by WSPD in 1955 and Woman of the Year by the Business & Professional Women in 1962. She was also awarded the Gold Key Award for outstanding alumnus at the University of Toledo in 1962 and was listed on Who'™s Who of American Women. She is survived by her brother, Bill Kamke (Dorothy) of Jacksonville (FL); her two sons, David Kuebbeler (Ann) of LaJunta (CO) and Philip Kuebbeler (Judy) of Holland (OH); three grandchildren, Andrea Kuebbeler (Kevin) of Evanston (IL), Rob Kuebbeler of Steamboat Springs (CO), and Bill Kuebbeler (Sarah) of Fishers (IN); four great-grandchildren, Cassidy, Dylan, Drew and Tyler; two nieces and a nephew; and step-daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Meinert. Family and friends may visit at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Rd., on Friday from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Memorial services will be conducted in Swan Creek Retirement Village, 5916 Cresthaven Lane in Toledo on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Swan Creek Retirement Life Fund, 5916 Cresthaven Lane, Toledo, Ohio 43614 or Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 725 Navarre Ave., Toledo, Ohio 43605.
