Jean Emily DeWitt age 96 passed away peacefully after a short illness on May 11, 2023. Jean was born on November 16, 1926 in Toledo, Ohio to the late Otto and Marie (Schmidt) Warnke. Jean was a graduate of Clay High School and attended the University of Toledo. Jean married the late Robert William DeWitt, her high school sweetheart in 1947.
Jean was active in the Wynn Elementary School Mothers Club and Clay High School Band Parents. Jean participated on the Wynn School Farewell Committee to update and publish "The History of Wynn School". She retired after 21 years as an Oregon School Bus Driver and later volunteered at Mercy St. Charles Hospital assisting with patient admissions and in the hospital gift shop. Jean, a longtime member of First St. John Lutheran Church, participated in numerous activities including chairing the church annual Chicken and Ham fundraiser, chaired annual card party and was a member of the Ruth Circle and Quilters at First St. John. She also enjoyed reading, gardening, crafts, bowling and golf.
Most of all Jean was a beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Family and friends will remember her as helpful, kind, strong and resilient with a caring heart.
Jean is survived by her son, Tom (Virginia) DeWitt; daughter, Terry (Jay)Dellinger; daughter in law, Penny DeWitt; grandchildren, Lori Pfeiffer, Matthew (Adrienne)DeWitt, Adam (Stephanie) DeWitt, Nathan (Megan) DeWitt, Sean (Kathryn) DeWitt, Ashley (Nick)Grady, Zachary (Brandi) Huss; great grandchildren,
Brandon and Ian DeWitt, Derek and Nicholas Pfeiffer, Hannah, Addyson, James DeWitt, Virginia Ann, Isabelle and Noah DeWitt, Aria Grady, Kai Huss; Sister, Geraldine Klein.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; son's, David and Gary DeWitt; brother, William Warnke; sisters, June Brown and Shirley Likens.
Visitation will be Monday, May 15, 2023, from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy, Oregon. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 15 at 11:00 am with visitation at First. St. John Lutheran Church, 2471 Seaman, Toledo beginning at 10:00 a.m. Graveside service will follow in the North Oregon Cemetery. The family has requested memorials be directed to First St. John Lutheran Church Improvement Fund or Quilters, the Oregon-Jerusalem Historical Society and Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
