Obituary

Jean Marie Newman took the hand of the Lord and stepped smartly into eternal bliss this past Saturday (September 25th) at 10:10 a.m. Although Jeannie turned eighty earlier this month, she was robbed of much of her life this past decade by Alzheimers. This is incredibly ironic since Jeannie was such a bright star graduating with honors from Clay High School in 1959. A scholarship offer then took her to the University of Toledo and St. Vincents to study X-Ray technology. Her career was in ascendancy when in 1961 she married the love of her life David, who still survives. The nuptial celebration at St. John's Lutheran Church was hardly complete when the United States Army interrupted with a call to report to Texas. The sudden change in geography did not deter Jeannie's career ambitions. She was soon on board the staff at Killeen Hospital in Texas, and later at Anniston Hospital in Alabama after Dave received an Army duty transfer. Once the Army obligation was fulfilled, the couple moved back home to Oregon. Jeannie was received with open arms at Toledo Radiology Associates where she worked for the next thirty-years, and another decade-plus at St. Charles Hospital. David, meanwhile, enjoyed a long career as a executive with the Chessie Railroad System. They were glad to be home and settled down to a long prosperous life fully engaged in community affairs. Jeannie's instinctive desire to help others took her to the Eastern Stars Red Hats, Christian Women's Association, Sunday School teacher and myriad other civic duties devoted to helping those in need. When called upon she even served as a cub scout leader because, "well, someone had to do it".Jeannie was also a competitive athlete who, along with Dave, were active members of the Laurel Hills and Westowne Tennis Clubs. As much as Jeannie loved life her eyes sparkled the brightest around the holidays. She especially loved Halloween and Christmas. In fact, as All Hallows Eve approached Jeannie and Dave became the pied pipers of their Eastmoreland neighborhood. Any kid worthy of a costume knew where to find happiness. Jeannie was not content until every little weary traveler had a bag full of hersheys, mars, and other sundry sugar specialties. Their reputation grew to such an extent that one year WTVG's 6 o'clock news went live from their front lawn with the reporter extolling the virtues of free candy.Jeannie's approach to Christmas was yet another festival of good cheer. Their home was transformed into what would appear to be Kris Kringle's workshop, replete with illuminated confers big and small outside, and an elves delight inside. Hummels of every age and description greeted holiday well-wishers. Their "it must be live" tree was always reminiscent of the best of Frankenmuth. Holiday meals were yet another Jeannie specialty. They appeared more like royal banquets than just an evening repast. It was always a joy to be with a person who exemplified what Will Rogers meant when he said, "I never met a person I didn't like". But in this case Jeannie could go one better than the great humorist. Jeannie also never met a dog she didn't like. Their English Setters had to be the luckiest canines ever conceived. By every measure Jeannie stands out as the highest quality individual anyone could ever know; the proud product and only child of parents Harold and Josephine Dunberger who preceded her in death. She will long be remembered by those she touched. The family will receive friends at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road, Thursday, September 30, 2021 from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm. Graveside services Friday, October 1, 2021 at Lake Township Cemetery.
