Obituary

Jeff, age 73, was born in Akron, Ohio to Joe and Evva Hoogerhyde. He traded his earthly struggles for his heavenly home this Thanksgiving, November 27, 2014 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Jeff leaves to cherish his memory, Catherine, beloved wife of 46 years; sister, JoAnn Hoogerhyde of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; son, Jeffry R. and wife Dr. Kathy Woods, of Minneapolis, MN, son, Jason J. and wife Melissa and grandsons, Hayden and Evan all of West Chester, Ohio; foster daughter, Trinh Tran and husband, Hein and children, Lynn and Kevin of Monroe, Ct.; sister-in-law, Lorna Stoddart and husband, Ian of Ottawa, Canada; brother-in-law, Bob Stephen and wife Rassi of Yellowknife, North West Territories, Canada. Jeff grew up in Cuyahoga Falls and after highschool, where he was a football hero, he went on to Miami University. At Miami he pursued an education, a good time and made many great friends, counted among them, his Fiji brothers. Upon graduating from Miami in 1963 he joined the USAF and served 5 years as an avionics electronics officer and attained the rank of Captain. During a 2 year assignment at Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico, he met and fell in love with Catherine, the Canadian nurse from Montreal who was vacationing on the beautiful island. They married, and because one of those Fiji brothers, they moved to Oregon, Ohio where Jeff worked for the Toledo Sports Center as manager of The Inn Restaurant for 7 years. He then moved to a career in banking with First National/Fifth Third Bank which spanned over 20 years in various capacities, primarily in the branch system in Oregon, Ohio. During this time he was involved with such organizations as the American Institute of Banking, Oregon Chamber of Commerce, The Boy Scouts, the Oregonian Club, political activity with the Oregon Republicans, ombudsman at St. Charles Hospital, and remains active with the Oregon Kiwanis club. He has served as president of both Kiwanis and Oregonian Clubs. Jeff enjoyed playing euchre and other card games with friends around the area. During their growing years Jeff was very involved with the kids and their school and church activities, rarely missing an event. He taught the kids the importance of good sportsmanship and doing your best. He instilled values of faithfulness, truthfulness, accountability, hard work and the fun factor. He has continued that enthusiasm with his grandchildren, enjoying their activities through Facebook or YouTube and teaching them such important life skills as winning at cribbage. Jeff retired early due to declining heath but continued with many enjoyments. He happily cheered on his Cleveland Browns or Indians and loved most sports. He golfed until 3 years ago both here and in Florida where he and Cath have spent the last 7 winters. They owned boats for almost 40 years and fished and cruised Lake Erie and the islands out of Meinke'™s Marina. In the early years he was a bowler and raquet ball player. Jeff has had great faith and been an active member of the United Methodist Church all his life. Until recently he continued his grass cutting ministry and has been a financial secretary for the past 6 years. Jeff also shared with others when appropriate, life as an amputee and life after coronary bypass surgery. Through every phase of his illness he has had an esteemed Physician and friend in Dr. R. Chaudhary and his staff at the Oregon Clinic. Thanks to Dr. Chaudhary for his dedicated care, guidance and collaboration over the past 30 years. Jeff will be sadly missed but his daily courage and optimism have inspired his family and those who know him well. Tributes may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, Hospice of Northwest Ohio or a personal favorite charity. 'œGood night sweet prince, may flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.' Friends may visit at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S.
