Obituary

Jerry Helyer, 74, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away suddenly on June 7, 2013 at St. Charles Hospital in Oregon. He was born on January 13, 1939 to John and Helen (Masney) Helyer. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1957 and attended the University of Toledo. He was stationed in Korea during his Army military service. Jerry worked in the service department for Columbia Gas for over 35 years before retiring in 1998 and was a member of Utility Workers Union of America Local 349. Jerry had an adventurous spirit. He enjoyed the outdoors while hiking, camping and traveling. Together, he and his wife visited over 40 National Parks and Monuments. He was a dedicated gardener and took great pride in his rose and vegetable gardens. Jerry was an avid college sports fan whose favorite teams were Notre Dame and Ohio State. Jerry was a loving, caring husband and father who provided the foundation that the family was built on. He was a thoughtful man who put the needs of others ahead of his own. If you needed help, you always knew he would be there for you without question. Jerry is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carol; son Gregory (Patricia) Helyer; daughter, Karen (Eric) Holman; grandchildren, Jacob and Alexis Holman; brother, James Helyer; sister-in-law, Joyce Helyer; brother-in-law Richard (Marilyn) Baranowski; many nieces and nephews; and Doggy friends, Bella and Hudson. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Joseph and Jack Helyer. Friends may visit at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Rd., on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 12 at St. Stephen'™s Catholic Church on Consaul Street from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Ignatious Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial contributions to Helping Hands, Hospice of Northwest Ohio, St. Thomas Aquinas Church, St. Stephen'™s Catholic Church and Little Sisters of the Poor.
