Joan C. "Grandma Jo" Breier, of Oregon, Ohio, a retired school teacher and artist, died June 10, 2008, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. She was 77. The cause of death was multiple myeloma. If Joan were to be graded on getting the most out of life, she'd get a 4.0. Sparked by curiosity, boundless energy, and a desire to seek new challenges, she had an incredible appetite for travel, for her art, and a rich and broad spectrum of other activities. While others sat wondering what if, Joan kept moving, always seeking that next adventure, that next project, that next goal. She was born on October 21, 1930, in Farmer, Ohio, to Alfred and Marjorie Bolander. The family later moved to East Toledo, where Joan graduated from Waite High School in 1948. After her marriage to Walter C. Breier in 1949, Joan raised three boys and then returned to school, graduating with a degree in education from the University of Toledo in 1969. After graduation, Joan joined the Toledo Public Schools system, primarily working at Raymer Elementary School. Later in her career, she was instrumental in developing TPS's Gifted Program. Always in pursuit of knowledge, Joan returned to UT and earned a masters degree in education. Joan was a gifted artist who worked in a variety of disciplines, including water color, acrylics, oils, pottery and basketry. In her later years, she had an art studio built at her Oregon home. Joan retired after a 25-year career with TPS, after which she began traveling widely around the United States, Britain and Europe. Joan being Joan, she became active in the Elder Hostel organization - learning travel adventures where she practiced her art and discovered new interests. Joan was a dedicated mother to her children, always supporting their interests and encouraging them to be the best they could be in whatever careers or hobbies they chose. She was a wonderful grandmother and great-grand-mother, never missing a ballgame, a play or a graduation. And she was a great friend who always looked for the best in people. Joan was widowed at 48 but, despite the hardship, she kept going and kept growing. She later married Irv Sanks, a soul mate who loved to travel and experience new challenges as much as she did. Among their achievements, Irv and Joan built a home near Marion, North Carolina, which became a favorite seasonal destination for many years. Joan was a member of the Toledo Artists Club, Toledo Women's Art League, Spectrum and Prizm. She was a long-time supporter of the Toledo Opera and the Toledo Museum of Art. She was a former member of the Velvetone Choraliers and the Oregon Community Theater. Joan was a member of a pair of Red Hat Societies - The Feather Waites and The Sun Dried Tomatoes. Joan was preceded in death by her husbands, Walter C. Breier and Irv Sanks; her sister, Sue A. Zeadker, and her parents.
Surviving are her sons, Gary (Sally), Gregory (Becky) and Rick (Debi) Breier; grandchildren, Josh (Christy) Breier, Melissa (Eddie) Cutcher, Nick Breier, Sarah Breier, Bill Breier, and Lindsey Breier; great-grandchildren, Eddie J. Cutcher, and Zane, Wade and Alexis Breier; aunt, Myra Downer; special cousin, Patricia [Oley] Olsen; and special niece, Jan Zeadker Shook.
