Obituary

Joanne M. Eberlin Schumaker, 90, of Oregon, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at Ebeid Hospice Center, surrounded by love. She was born in Toledo, Ohio to Elmer and Geraldine Eberlin on August 11, 1933. When Joanne was 14 years old, she caught the eye of a handsome young man named Henry Schumaker as she was getting off the school bus and from that day, their love story and commitment to each other blossomed. Joanne graduated from Clay High School class of 1951. She married the love of her life, Hank Schumaker, in 1953 and they shared 71 amazing years with each other, creating many beautiful memories throughout their lives.

Together they built a strong family raising five children. They also enjoyed socializing with a close circle of friends, often going out dancing and to dinner on weekend evenings. Joanne was part of a bunco ladies' group, maintaining those friendships throughout her life. After the birth of her twin daughters, she joined a local twins club to share that experience with other mothers.

Joanne and Hank worked on the family farm growing many crops including apples, plums, peaches and cherries, soy beans, sugar beets, wheat and hay until the mid-1980s. Joanne managed the household, helping with the cherry harvest and running the family's roadside fruit stand. She was an avid gardener, and an accomplished preserver of all fruits and vegetables, canning everything the farm produced. She also loved working with the Head Start program nurturing children who benefited from her care. For 15 years she volunteered at Bay Park Hospital, greeting community members in their time of need. She welcomed them all warmly with her beautiful, sweet smile.

She loved the time spent on the water at Anchor Point Marina and Put-in-Bay Island. For years Joanne and Hank would go "deer hunting" in the Maumee Bay State Park, counting the deer they saw at sunset, and keeping a notebook of the tally. Above all, what she loved most was devoting her life to raising her wonderful family.

Joanne is survived by her children, William "Bill" (Darla) Schumaker, Sandy (Colin) Gill, Diane (Chad) Devillier, Scott Schumaker; grandchildren, Danielle, Andrew, Brian, Mike, Cody, Ashley, April, Chris, Kyle, Trey, Dylan; and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings; her husband Henry Schumaker; and her daughter Sally Hartzell.

The family will hold a private service at Restlawn Memorial Park. Expressions of sympathy in Joanne's name may be directed to First St. John Lutheran Church or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
