Joel S. Joe Vargo Sr. passed away September 23, 2007 at St. Charles Mercy Hospital. He was born September 21, 1933 to Julius and Elizabeth O. Vargo, who preceded him in death. Joel resided in Jerusalem Township and enjoyed spending winters in Palmetto, Florida with his wife, Frances. He retired from the Toledo Foreign Trade Zone (Toledo World Industries) in 1987, where he worked as a forklift operator, foreman and superintendent. Joe was a proud Korean War Veteran, serving in the U.S. Army 5th Regimental Combat Team, 24th Infantry Division.
He was admired for his kindness, patience and ability to get along with others. Joel was an avid hunter, fisherman and bird watcher. He also loved collecting stamps and especially coins. With his family, he hosted the Calvin U.C.C. Annual Family Picnic for 26 years. He was proud of his Hungarian heritage and Magyar cooking.
Being an active and well respected member of the community, Joel was involved in many organizations including Calvin United Church of Christ, where he was past consistory vice-president, served as co-chairman of Calvin's annual Birmingham Ethnic Festival for several years, belonged to the Calvin Auxiliary (kolbasz makers) for many years and as its president for about 10 years. He was also past president of the Hungarian Club of Toledo, president of the Toledo Crow Club. Joel was member of the Mason's Robinson Locke Lodge #4659, the Valley of Toledo Lodge Council Chapter, Scottish Rite, a member of the Bavarian Sports Club, American Legion Christ Dunberger Post and the Korean War Veteran Chapter 231. He was very proud to be a life member and past commander of the Greater Birmingham VFW Post 2906. Joel was one of the origina l organizers of the Birmingham Ethnic Festival, and was inducted into the Birmingham Hall of Fame as a distinguished citizen in 1988. He coached baseball at Wynn and Jerusalem Schools and was also a Boy Scout Master for Troop 131 in Oregon. .
Surviving are his wife of 51 ½ years, Frances (Kozak); sons, Joel (Mary Lou) and Jeff (Stephanie Nagy); brothers, Julius (Patricia) and John (Phyllis) Vargo; sister, Elizabeth Renz, as well as many other relatives and friends.
The family will greet friends at Calvin United Church of Christ, 1946 Bakewell Street, Toledo, OH on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. A Memorial Service will be then be held in the church at 11:00 a.m. followed by the V. F. W Post 4906 service. A celebration of Joel's life will then continue at the Hungarian Club at 224 Paine Ave., Toledo. Donations in Joel's memory can be made to Calvin United Church of Christ Building Fund or the Hungarian Club of Toledo. Joel's family wishes to give their sincere, special thanks to the doctors and nurses (Angie, Jane, Sue, Keith and others) at St. Charles Hospital for their wonderful care. Arrangements are being handled by the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home.
