Beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, John Babarcsik returned to work alongside our Lord in Heaven Sunday, August 12th, 2012, just before dawn. John Joseph Babarcsik was born on September 11, 1922, in Barton, Ohio, to John Sr. and Ilona (Helen) Toth. His parents emigrated from Hungary just a year before, and John Jr. watched his dad labor in Barton, a coal company town in Belmont County, Ohio. In 1931, the Babarcsiks returned to their home in Janik, Hungary, and John Joseph continued his schooling there. During his teens, he met the young woman, Margaret Potoczky, who would become his wife for over 70 years. John and Margaret married on January 31, 1942 and, in 1945, welcomed their first daughter, Emma. John'™s desire to return to the USA was realized in 1947, and a few months later his wife and daughter joined him. The young family grew in 1956 with the birth of their second daughter, MaryAnn. Though John worked for many companies, he began and ended his career as a machinist at the Chevrolet transmission facility on Alexis Road from 1963 to 1992. John and Margaret were longtime parishioners of St. Stephen Catholic Church.
John was a man of many talents. He built his grandsons a tree house and his granddaughter a 6-foot snow bunny that was featured in The Toledo Blade. John had a wonderful sense of humor and often dressed up as Santa Claus for his loved ones. John was also a devoted videographer at every family gathering " leaving behind thousands of hours of memories that span decades. John held dear many Hungarian traditions, playing Csardas records, turning sutni szalona on his patio fireplace and always delighted to eat anything sweet, especially Margaret'™s palacsinta, nut rolls, and dios torte cake. John was a craftsman, and a genius when it came to building projects. John loved working in his yard, and grew beautiful roses and flowers, cherry and walnut trees, and " most abundantly " grapes to make good wine. The only dispute John ever had was with pilfering squirrels, using creative ways, including homemade slingshots, to repel the bushy-tailed thieves.
John was a very loving husband and was always seen treating his beloved wife, Margaret, with great devotion and respect. He was a wonderfully generous and supportive father and grandfather. An example of John'™s love and humor was to measure every great-grandchild to see how tall he or she had grown by the buttons on his shirt. The children delighted in this constant ritual to see how many buttons higher they were on every visit!
John has gone to Heaven in advance of his beloved wife, Margaret. He has been reunited with his parents and younger sisters, Helen and Mary. John'™s legacy of generosity, love and hard work will forever be cherished and celebrated by his daughters, Emma (George) Oravecz and MaryAnn (Jerry) Wright, and grandchildren Francis John (Wednesday) Szollosi, Matthew (Melanie) Szollosi, and Victoria Wright (Justin Perkins) of Rockville, Maryland, Kristin and Trace Meyer, Carolyn Oravecz and David (Louise) Oravecz. Nine great-grandchildren, who had the honor and joy of knowing him, are: Lucas Babarcsik Szollosi, Audrey, Addison, Sofia, Iszabel, Ross and Alessandra Szollosi, Katie and George Meyer. The family would also like to thank the tremendous staff at Lutheran Village of Wolf Creek and Hospice of Northwest Ohio for the wonderful care and thoughtfulness they have shown to John.
