Obituary

John G. Garcia, 74, of Toledo,passed away on Monday, March 24, 2003 at Waterford Commons Nursing Home. He was born in Houston, Texas on November 1, 1928 to A.R. and Ruth (Reyna) Garcia. John was employed at Libbey Owens Ford Glass Company as a supervisor for 42 years. He became active in politics and was proud to be the first Hispanic elected to the State Legislature, where he served two terms as Representative of the 50th District. Some of his political experiences were Delegate for the Ohio Republican Conventions in 1968, 72, 80, and 95, co-chairman of the NW Ohio Republican Hispanice Assembly, chairman of the 18th Ward, former member of the Toledo Urban Renewal Advisory Committee, former trustee, vice chairman of the East Toledo Family Center, president of East Toledo Against Drugs, Inc. Selective Service System of Ohio - Local Board #76. Johns club memberships were many. He was a honorary member of the Glassworkers Local #9, member of the Eagles #197, the East Toledo Club, board of trustees of the Euclid United Methodist Church, member of the Point Place Business Association, Yondota Masonic Lodge, Zenobia Shrine and the Hi-Twelve International #324, to name a few. John attended Jefferson Davis High School in Houston Texas, for his three years, where he boxed in the Houston Texas Golden Gloves his second and third year. He attended his fourth year of high school and graduated from Gibsonburg High School. John participated in the 1948 US Olympic Boxing Trials, was the 1949-50 AAU Featherweight Boxing Champion and the Golden Gloves Champion of Toledo. For 10 years, John coached several national boxing champions and was an ex officio member of the Athletic Boxing Commission. John was very involved in securing grants for the renovation of the Valentine Theater and helped pass legislation to provide state assistance to build the new Jeep plant that kept 4900 jobs in Toledo. Surviving are is loving wife, Dolores; mother, Ruth Rodriguez, Houston; sons, Thomas (Sherryl), John G. Jr., Bruce (Becky); daughters, Sue (Jeff) Fravor and Gay L. (Don) Huss; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; several brothers and sisters. John was preceded in death by his father, A.R. Garcia and sister, Helen Pena. The family will recieve friends at the Eggleston-Meinert Funeral Home, Woodville Road Chapel, 1111 Woodville at Fostoria Road, Millbury on Wednesday from 2 to 8 pm with funeral services following the visitation at 8:00 pm. Memorial contributions in Johns honor may be made to the East Toledo Family Center or the charity of the donors choice.
