Born on October 12, 1942 to John and Ruth Hansen, John spent his life as a proud and active member of the Jerusalem Township community. After graduating from Clay High School in 1960, he studied chemical engineering at Toledo University before enlisting in the United States Air National Guard. After his time in the reserves he returned home to assist his father with running the Hansen family farm. In 1982, John expanded the farm's field of influence by purchasing a ditcher and starting Hansen Drainage. After that, if a trench was being dug in the township, it's even odds that John was driving the tiling machine. For over 20 years John was a dedicated volunteer with the Jerusalem Township Fire Department and after hanging up his fireman's hat, he served multiple terms as a Jerusalem Township Trustee. As a Trustee, John advocated for the creation of the John T. Kennedy Memorial Park and the Jerusalem Township Recreation Fields.
John was naturally an early riser and as a man with varied interests John certainly knew how to fill a day. From dancing at the old Gulish Villa to playing waterball at the fireman's conventions, it was hard to predict where his fancies would fall. He could usually be found tinkering away at something around the farm and much of his free time in retirement was spent taking his tractors out for a drive with his friends and meticulously restoring a '54 International C110 pick up truck that once belonged to his father. John was one of the hardest working men a person could know, but he also knew how to appreciate a cold beer at the end of a long day.
But as undeniably impressive as John's accomplishments are, his true legacy lies in his family. After meeting at a JTVFD Donkeyball game, John married Linda S. Seymour on July 4th 1975. Together with his wife, John raised four children and inspired twelve grandchildren on the same plot of land that he cultivated with his father. John was a hard worker and a voracious learner but he was always a child at heart. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke it was always something worth hearing. He could turn a backhoe from farm equipment to diving board faster than you can say "mom's worst nightmare". He always had space next to his chair in the garage for one of his children that needed advice, and he always had space in "the pocket" of his recliner for a grandkid that needed tickling. Where Linda was fiery sass, John was stoic stability. Together they created a life abounding with love.
We will hold our memories of John close to our hearts as we continue to live by the excellent example he set for all those who were fortunate enough to call him either friend, poppy, or dad
