John A. McDonel, 79, loving husband, father and grandfather, of Northwood, OH, passed away May 3, 2012 at Mercy St. Charles Hospital with his family by his side. He was born in Toledo, Ohio on July 26, 1932 to John and Thelma(Tyler) McDonel. John was a 1951 graduate of Clay High School and a University of Toledo graduate with his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War on the USS Kemper. Johns service medals include the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Korean Services Medal and United Nation Services Medal. On May 18, 1963 he married the love of his life, Virginia Bougher. Together they built a beautiful life with a family of four daughters. With his love of the outdoors, he owned and operated J.A. McDonel Excavating Company for 20 years. As the cold winters began to wear on him, he took employment with Wood County as a Sanitary Engineer, retiring in 1996. John was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and sang in the church choir for many years. He was also a member of the Kiwanis. During his free time, John enjoyed golfing and reading, and many times re-reading a good book. His life was devoted to his family, from lovingly guiding and encouraging his daughters to attending numerous events for his children and grandchildren.
The last years of his life were spent joyfully caring for his wife, Virginia, after she suffered a stroke. He left a legacy of carefree happiness that will live on in the hearts of all those who knew him.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia; children, Lillie (Scott) Winckowski, Laura (Matthew) Parrish, Julie (Jeffery) Vance, and Jennifer (Robert) Eisenmann; grandchildren, Lydia, Grace, and Jack Winckowski; Allie and Michael Parrish; Jordan, Cydney, Noah, Abigail, Luke, Ginny, Jacob, and Ellie Vance; John, Samuel and Alexander Eisenmann. John was preceded in death by his parents,and also his step-mother, Ruth McDonel, step-father, Samuel Manera, and step-brother, Samuel Manera Jr.
Family and friends may visit at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road, on Monday, May 7, 2012 from 2-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Calvary Lutheran Church, 1930 Bradner Road, on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. and where the family will greet friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Lake Township Cemetery.
