Obituary

John G. Novak, 83, of east Toledo passed away November 20, 2006 in St. Charles Mercy Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born in Toledo, OH on September 14, 1923 to John and Mary (Hudeck) Novak.  He attended Waite High School and joined the United States Navy in 1941.  He served as a gunner's mate on a cruiser and destroyer in the Pacific Theater in WWII, earning 9 battle stars. . He had been employed as a rigger by the Interlake Steel Corp for 32 years and retired in 1978. John enjoyed working with wood in his spare time and truly relished being Papa to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  He was a life long member of  Holy Rosary Church and a lifetime member of the Greater Birmingham Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4906 in Toledo, Ohio.   John is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Ann Jess (Megyesi); daughters, Marcia (Michael) Petersen, Janet (James) Boyle and Joan (Don) Goins; grandchildren, Marla (Michael) McGillivray, Micah Petersen, Aaron Nauman, Amanda (Michael) Kaczynski and Erikka Goins; great grandchildren, Kyle and Madison Kaczynski; brother, Lawrence (Carolyn);  sisters, Mrs. Mary Balas, Mrs. Margaret (Sam) Rothbaum and Mrs. Rita (Wayne) Zinn and many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Clara Novak,  Betty Kenney, Frances Hurlbert and Agnes Olson and brother, Arthur.   Family and friends may visit on Friday, November 24, 2006 from 2-9 p.m. at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road, Oregon with a VFW service to be held at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will begin in the funeral home on Saturday at 10:15 a.m. and proceed to St. Stephen Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Park. Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy in John's memory are asked to consider  St. Jude's Children's Hospital or a charity of the donor's choice.  The family would like to thank the staff and physicians at the St. Charles Emergency Center and Dr. Daniel Radecki and Shakil Kahn for their kindness and consideration during this difficult time Visitation: Visitation Times Friday, 2-9 p.m. Oregon Chapel
