John G. Szabo Jr., 86 a well-known homebuilder, prominent Hungarian, and Oregon resident passed away June
17, 2003, at Heartland of Perrysburg. He was one of seven children of John and Mary Szabo of Birmingham.
He graduated from Genoa High School in 1934. He attended Purdue University and attained a degree in
agriculture. Called to serve his country, he proudly fought in WWII and earned commemorative medals for his
strength and honor in the Army.
He found the love of his life, Mary Lorraine O'Connor, an Irish lass with auburn hair and blue eyes at the
Trainon Dance Hall. Together they established the building company, Jo-Mar Corporation listed in Dunn and
Bradstreet for successful business endeavors. John was admired throughout the community for the fine quality
of the homes he built. He was well regarded for his honesty and generosity.
In marriage and fatherhood he was no less the man. On October 29, 1949 he married Mary Lorraine at Queen of
the Holy Rosary Cathedral. As a father he was present for the guidance and direction of his children, John,
Mary Lynn, Sheila and Sarah. He gave his children the opportunity and security to grow and learn. He loved
his wife and children with a passion others only dream of. Therefore, in life he was happy, satisfied and
complete.
He lovingly admired his children and grandchildren. Their accomplishments gave him great pride and joy. His
faith in God and righteousness, trustfully, will guide in sorrow.
John was preceded in death by son, John; wife, Mary Lorraine.
Surviving family members include his daughters and sons -in-law; Mary Lynn and Dr. Charles Michalak, Dr.
Sheila Claire and Dennis Manion, Sarah and Scott Gladieux; grandchildren, Rachael, John, Mary, Melissa,
Michael, Andrew, Shannon, Samson and Stanley; great granddaughter, Katie. No less in his memory are those
he cherished, brothers William B. and (Jean deceased) Szabo, Julius and Alice Szabo, Alfred and Annabelle
Szabo; sisters and brothers-in-law, Claire and Lee Sanner, William and Betty O'Connor, Paul and Nancy
O'Connor. Many nieces and nephews shall also remember.
