Captain John Toth embraced eternal rest on April 1, 2014 at the age of 88, while surrounded by his loving family.
The youngest of eight children, Johns early years may not have been filled with possessions, but he was blessed with a close family that raised him in a life filled with love and laughter. After serving his country in World War II as part of the Merchant Marine and the Navy (serving part of that time on the USS Endicott), John returned to Toledo and married his beloved wife, Mary, on October 1, 1949. He worked on Lake Erie and the Maumee River for nearly 45 years, first as Captain of the Little Rock for Toth Transportation, and later as Captain of the Sand Pebble for Kuhlman Corporation. He retired from Kuhlman Corporation in 1990.
Johns life was filled with simple, yet peaceful, pleasures. John enjoyed being outside and working in the yard, and he and his wife would often walk through the neighborhood where they were known by all. He was skilled at woodworking and would often craft many objects for friends and family, including the cradle for his two grandchildren.
John was a long-time member of Memorial United Church of Christ, where he was always quick to lend a helping hand. As a 32nd degree Mason, he was a member of Barton Smith Lodge, and as a licensed Great Lakes Captain he was an officer (including President) of the Toledo Lodge of the International Shipmasters Association. John'™s service for his country entitled him to membership in the American Legion.
John'™s devoted wife Mary preceded him in death by nine weeks. He was also preceded in death, during a period of many years, by his parents Michael and Mary Toth, by his brothers Michael, Joseph and Julius, and by his sisters Helen, Mary, Ann and Irene. Surviving John are his sons John Michael (Christine) and Robert Alan (Deborah), grandson Steven and granddaughter Cindy Allen (Gary). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and will be missed by the countless friends he made wherever he worked and lived.
Johns priority was always making others lives easier, yet for someone who tended to stay in the background and let others have the spotlight his absence will be felt by many. He leaves a living legacy as a Captain, provider, chauffer, mechanic, craftsman, dishwasher, gardener, family member, neighbor and friend. All who knew him are not sad because he has earned his rest in heaven with his wife and all of his friends and family members who have passed before him.
John'™s life will be celebrated with visitation at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Rd. on Friday, April 4, 2014, from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m., with a Masonic Service at 7:30 pm. Funeral services will take place in the funeral home on Saturday at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. Please join his family as they say one final goodbye to this amazing man.
The family would like to thank the staff at Kingston of Perrysburg for their loving care and support, the staff at Mercy St. Charles Hospital and Advanced Specialty Hospitals of Toledo, and the staff at Hospice of Northwest Ohio for John'™s care during the past four weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations to Memorial United Church of Christ or Hospice of Northwest Ohio would be appreciated.
