Obituary

John E. 'œBucky' Vargo, 83, passed away on March 27, 2012 at his residence. He was born in Toledo, Ohio to Julius and Elizabeth (Orosz) Vargo on January 16, 1929. A 1947 graduate of Waite High School where he played basketball, softball and four years of football, including the 1945 season that won the State of Ohio High School Championship. He attended Elmhurst College and The University of Toledo. John was stationed in Germany with the US Army between 1951-1953 and was Honorably Discharged in 1957. On May 9, 1959 he married Phyllis Leisenheimer. He retired from LOF in 1987 after 30 years, and co-owned Vargo'™s Village Nite Club in East Toledo with his brother, Julius, from 1968-1978. John was inducted into the Birmingham Hall of Fame in 1992 as an asset to his church, country and neighborhood. He was a life-long member of Calvin United Church of Christ where he served in the church'™s Consistory, was an active volunteer and Co-Chaired the Calvin Auxiliary Kolbasz makers with his wife for several years. John was exceptionally proud of his Hungarian heritage and was a member of the Hungarian Club of Toledo. He was also a member of the Birmingham VFW Post 4906 and the Paragon Masonic Lodge. He and his wife enjoyed traveling. John enjoyed sports and was an avid Toledo Mud Hens fan, where a brick resides in his honor. John is survived by his wife of 52 years, Phyllis J. (Leisenheimer) Vargo; children, Paul J. (Catherine) and Jackie A. (Michael) Momenee; sister, Elizabeth Renz; sisters-in-law, Patricia Vargo and Frances Vargo; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tom and Ruth Kasch; step-grandchildren, Jennifer (Jeremy) Momenee Price, Ryan (Michelle) Stalk, Misty Stalk; 4 step-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Julius Vargo and Elizabeth (Orosz) Vargo; brothers, Julius J. Vargo and Joel S. Vargo. Visitation will be held at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, 440 S. Coy Rd., on Friday, March 30th from 2:00 p.m until 9:00 p.m. and where Masonic services will take place at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Calvin United Church of Christ, 1946 Bakewell St., Toledo, and where family will greet friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow the service at Willow Cemetery. The family wishes to thank Odessy Hospice for all of their loving care, and especially, Jim and Lisa. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to be made to Calvin United Church of Christ.
