Joseph A. Horvath, 89, of Toledo, passed away Saturday, February 12, 2011 at Woodside Hospice House, Pinellas Park, Florida
He was born October 10, 1921 in Gynov, Czechoslovakia to Joseph L. and Anna (Dudrick) Horvath. At age 10, he traveled to the US and grew up in the Birmingham neighborhood. He attended Waite High School and Macomber High School and then joined the Army. He served in the Army Air Corp during World War II in the South Pacific. He married Alice Aszalos on May 16, 1953. He worked at Auto-Lite, Tillotson and DeVilbiss. Joe was a charter member of VFW Post 4906 and a past commander as well as secretary-treasurer for the Third Emergency Rescue Squadron. He was also a member of St. Stephen'™s Church, past president of the Holy Name Society and member of the Knights of Columbus. Joseph was a life long Detroit Tiger fan.
Joseph is survived by his wife, Alice; children, Mary (Rance) Miller, Charles, Andrew, Joseph (Robin), Barbara (Thomas Garey), David (Susie), Angela (Sadek) Abdelkader, Stephen; 10 grandchildren; sister, Anna (Edward) Opatrny. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Helen Fuller and brother, Louis.
Friends may call at Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road on Sunday, February 20th from 2:00-9:00 pm where the Rosary will be prayed at 4:00 pm and VFW services will be held at 7:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, February 21st at 10:00 am in St. Stephen'™s Catholic Church, 2018 Consaul Street, Toledo, where friends may call after 9:00 am. Interment will follow at St. Ignatius Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to St. Stephen'™s Catholic Church.
