Joseph P. Moran Jr., M.D., 97, died peacefully in his home at the Legends in Jackson, MI. He was born in Toledo, OH on May 9, 1916 to Joseph P. and Hazel (Pleiss) Moran. Joseph was a graduate of Waite High School, Ohio Wesleyan University and Western Reserve University Medical School, where he received his doctorate of medicine in 1943. He passed his State Medical Board Examination that same year and served his internship at Maumee Valley Hospital, Toledo. Dr. Moran entered the Army in 1944 and served part of his 3 year tour of duty in Japan. Upon his return, he did his surgical residency at St. Vincent'™s Hospital, Toledo, from 1946 -1949 and was chief of residents and chief of surgical services. His schooling also included the New York Post Graduate Hospital of General Surgery. Dr. Moran was a founding member of the American Board of Abdominal Surgery. His many memberships included, Academy of Medicine of Toledo and Lucas County, Ohio State Medical Association, American Medical Association, American College of Surgeons, American Board of Abdominal Surgery, Ohio Chapter of American College of Surgeons and Toledo Surgical Society. Dr. Moran was previously an active member of Toledo, St. Charles, St. Vincent'™s Mercy and St. Luke'™s Hospitals. He was a member and chairman of the Academy of Medicine and Toledo Bar Association for 24 years, served 27 years on the Board of Directors at Blue Cross & Blue Shield of NW Ohio, member of St. Charles Executive Board, member of the Toledo Hospital Executive Board, Director of Education at St. Charles Hospital, Chief of Surgery at Toledo Hospital, Vice-Present of the Academy of Medicine, President of Toledo Surgical Society and Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at M.C.O. Dr. Moran was a man of great energy and fidelity and held many other posts and positions and memberships during his life time.
Swimming was Dr. Moran'™s sport during his high school and college days. He was an outstanding swimmer and won many championships and set swimming records in national and state college meets. For over eleven years he swam at least one mile every day of the year. During World War II, he participated in the Pacific Four Invasions. Being a swimmer, he was placed in what is now called the Rangers. Their mission was to detonate the water mines before the invasions.
Dr. Moran was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Toledo, Ohio most of his life. He taught church school classes, served as a choir boy and as an acolyte. His ministry to others came natural and he was a role model for many.
Christmas was a special time for Dr. Moran. He loved sharing with others, and for over sixty years spent many evenings painting a large Christmas scene in the picture window of the family home. Dr. Moran loved sharing this painting and seeing the enjoyment it brought to his family and the community. Every year, cars would line his South Toledo neighborhood to see Dr. Moran'™s painting. This tradition is still being carried on today by Dr. Moran'™s children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding Dr. Moran in death are his wife of 59 years, Mildred in 2003; brother, Edward R. Moran; son, Joseph P. Moran III. Surviving are his children, Richard C. (Carol) Moran of Brooklyn, MI, Mary Lou (Michael) Sage of Fernandina Beach, FL and daughter-in-law, Patricia Moran of Naples, FL; grandchildren, Joseph P. (Carie) Moran IV, Heather (James) Doll, Audrey (Eric) Cowan, Holly (Jon) Beer and Stephanie (John) Denney; 10 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. in Lutheran Church of the Lakes, 8800 N. Rollin Hwy., Addison, MI. Private interment will take place in Toledo Memorial Park later in the day. The family suggests that memorial contributions in Joseph'™s honor be made to the Joseph and Hazel Moran Scholarship Fund, c/o Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware, OH 43015-9982 or the Lutheran Church of the Lakes, Addison, MI.
