Joseph J. Vargo, 69, of Toledo, passed away Monday, November 28, 2011 at Swan Point Care Center, with his loving wife by his side.
He was born in Toledo, Ohio on April 16, 1942 to Joseph and Rose (Marusz) Vargo. Joe was a US Army veteran of the Vietnam War. On July 1, 1967, he married Lydia Welch. Joe was employed as a studio supervisor with WTVG for 18 years, retiring in 1989. In later years, he was a courier for Med Labs. He was a longtime member of Calvin United Church of Christ. Joe was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing at Collins Park. Joe'™s 8th grade basketball team at St. Stephens'™s won a State Championship. The team was inducted into the Birmingham Hall of Fame. Joe enjoyed baseball, especially the Detroit Tigers. He coached baseball for Garfield and Raymer Schools and basketball for Calvin Church. Joe enjoyed Penn State football and playing cards. His true passion was spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Lydia; children, Marc (fiancée Denise), Kelly (fiancée Todd), and Matt (Jennifer); grandchildren, Marc Jr., Nick, Chloe, Hannah, Dylan, Josie, Kaelyn; sisters, Roe Pastor, Carol Surgo, Joanne (Charlie) Thompson, and Pat Lakin; cousin, Joan (Dan) Norman. Joe is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and loving family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Jim; and grandchildren, Jenna and Jon.
Friends may call at Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, on Thursday, December 1st from 2:00-9:00 pm. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 am Friday in the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Calvin United Church of Christ, Honor Flight of Northwest Ohio, Odyssey Hospice, or Sunshine Children'™s Home.
