Joyce Niemann Munger, 71, died peacefully at her home on Tuesday morning following a courageous 8 year battle with leiomyosarcoma, an extremely rare and incurable form of soft cell cancer.
Joyce was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on March 4, 1932 to Clarence Niemann and his wife, Florence Schoenfeld. In 1954 she and her husband, Cliff were united in marriage, and continued to live in Milwaukee with their son, Neil, until 1965 when her husband entered Eden Theological Seminary in Webster Grove, Missouri. During the three years that they lived in the St. Louis area, Joyce worked as a nursing assistant at Barnes Maternity Hospital in St. Louis. Following Cliffs ordination the family lived in Sipesville, Pennsylvania; Lawrenceburg, Indiana, Mount Vernon, Indiana and Elliston, Ohio. Following Cliffs retirement the couple moved to Genoa, Ohio.
Joyce loved children, and most of her working life was devoted to working with children in various capacities. She worked as an assistant teacher with developmentally disabled children in Lawrenceburg, a teacher with head start program and preschool in Mount Vernon, and then doing child care for working parents following her move to Ohio.
For the past two years, while battling the disease, she served as a manager for the leiomyosarcoma listserve of the Association of Cancer Online Resources (ACOR)m a world wide online support and information group comprised of leiomyosarcoma patients and/or caregivers. During that time she helped to develop an informational brochure to help victims of this rara cancer learn about the disease and its treatment.
A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Joyce is survived by her husband, the Rev. Clifford Munger, Genoa, a son, Neil, daughter-in-law Kathleen and two grandsons, Spencer and Branden, all of Bowling Green.
Family and friends may call at the Eggleston-Meinert-Pavley Fuenral Home, where visitation will be Friday, November 28, 2003 from 2 to 9 pm. Memorial services will be conducted Monday, December 1, 2003 at 7:00 pm in Trinity United Church of Christ, Elliston, Ohio. Interment will be private. The family suggest memorial contributions in Joyces name be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, St.John United Church of Christ, or the Victory Center.
