Obituary

Juanita Kovacs, 85, passed away June 18, 2009. She was born on June 15, 1924, to Grant and Blanche (Rowe) Spicer in Watertown, New York. She was the fifth of seven siblings. She was a graduate of Watertown High School in 1942 and went on to graduate as a registered nurse from House of Good Samaritan Hospital in 1947. She worked as a nurse at St. Lawrence State Hospital in Ogensburg, New York and Columbian Presbyterian Hospital in New York, New York. Juanita came to Toledo in 1950 and worked at The Toledo Hospital, St. Luke's Hospital and St. Vincent's Hospital while she also pursued her bachelor's degree from the University of Toledo. Her last employment was at Americare Nursing Center, which is now Arbors of Oregon. On July 20, 1959, she married Louis J. Kovacs. Louis passed away in 2005 after 46 years of marriage. Juanita was a member of the Hungarian Club and Calvin United Church of Christ where she sang in the choir. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Juanita was the art editor of her high school yearbook and nursing school yearbook. She continued her love of art through painting. She painted portraits of her three children when they were babies. Her artwork hung throughout the house as well as at her church. Juanita is survived by her son, Louis S. (Susan); daughters, Marlene (Timothy) Plank, Karen (Martin) Howard; step daughter, Suzanne Greer; grandchildren, Aaron, Jordan, Kayla, and Morgan Kovacs, Joseph, Daniel, Maxwell, Timothy, and Caroline Plank, Samuel, Rita, Andrew, and Nathan Howard; sisters, Ethelyn Derouin and Shirley Fay; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Louis J.; brothers, Robert, John, Joseph (a Pearl Harbor survivor), and sister, Theodora. Visitation will take place at Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon on Monday from 2 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 23, at 10 a.m. at Calvin United Church of Christ, 1946 Bakewell, Toledo. Interment will follow at North Oregon Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy in Juanita's name may be made to Calvin United Church of Christ.
