Karoly Borko, 74, of Curtice, Ohio passed away peacefully at Mercy St. Vincent Hospital in Toledo, Ohio on Saturday, November 3, 2012. Karoly was born in Retkozberencs, Hungary on April 5, 1938. He married Ilona (Helen) Nemeth on April 24, 1965 in Allen Park, Michigan at the Hungarian Reformed Church by Tibor Toth. Karoly and Helen were born in the same village in Hungary and met again in the United States in 1964.
In 1956, Karoly fled Hungary during the revolution to the United States of America. He was stationed at Fort Devens in Massachusetts and served in the Korea conflict for the United States Army. Karoly arrived in Toledo in the early 1960'™s. Karoly worked at Toledo Beaver Tool until the factory closed in the mid 1970'™s while starting his own business, K & T Machine Shop in 1972 semi-retiring full-time as a one man shop in the late 2000'™s. K & T Machine was named after his two sons, Karl and Thomas.
Karoly was an active member of the Hungarian Club of Toledo serving as Vice President in the early to late 1970'™s. He was the original co-signer for the loan papers for the purchase of the property. Karoly worked with many key club members to convert the old theater to a functional and useful hall for all Hungarians around the area to meet and socialize. Karoly was a member of Calvin United Church of Christ in Toledo, Ohio enjoyed attending the Hungarian language services. Karoly enjoyed entertaining guests, singing Hungarian songs and playing Hungarian card games at the Hungarian Club of Toledo. Karoly loved life and loved everyone having many friends and neighbors as well. He enjoyed being outside in the hot weather in his gazebo during the summer time and spending much time in his machine shop inventing many new ideas.
Karoly was preceded in death by his parents, Karoly and Maria Borko; step-mother, Rose Borko; infant daughter, Maria; and sister, Elizabeth Meszaros. Karoly is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Helen; sons, Thomas Borko and Karl Borko (fiancée Amy Mullins) and grandchildren, Meghan, Kylie and Keon Mullins. Also surviving in Hungary are his brother, Thomas (Margaret) Borko and many nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be at Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 South Coy Road, Oregon on Monday, November 5 from 2:00 p.m. ��" 8:00 p.m. where a prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Calvin United Church of Christ, 1946 Bakewell Street Toledo, Ohio on Tuesday¸ November 6, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. The family will begin receiving guests at 10:00 a.m. Karoly'™s wishes were to be cremated. The family would like to thank the staff at Mercy St. Charles Hospital and Mercy St. Vincent Hospital for their excellent care and wonderful support staff.
