Kathleen Helen DeVanna Simon, age 92, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at Mercy St. Vincent'™s Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Kay'™s greatest joy was her loving husband of 35 years, Chuck, their seven children, 15 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
She was born on February 9, 1918 to Frank James DeVanna and Helen Elizabeth (Guerin) DeVanna. Kay was born in Toledo, Ohio and moved to Kansas, Ohio when she was a child. In adolescence, Kay played basketball and volleyball at Jackson High School in Amsden, Ohio where she was editor of the school yearbook and Salutatorian of their 1935 class.
At eighteen she returned to Toledo to attend and graduate from Davis Business College in 1937. She then worked at Dowd Advertising and Champion Spark Plug. She was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church most of her adult life until moving to Oregon and where she became a member of St. Thomas Acquinas Parish.
In addition to her parents, Kay was preceded in death by her husband, Chuck; brothers, Norbert, Glenn, Donald, Patrick; Aunt and good friend, Mary Cherry; daughter-in-law, Sharon Simon; grandson'™s wife, Mylette Simon; grandchildren, Laura, Richard, Derek. She is survived by her sons, Dick (Janie), Jim, Tom (Alayne), Bill (Linda), Bob (Shelly); daughters, Eileen, Diane (Randy) Kersey. Kay is also survived by her sister, Mary Margaret Helow; brother, Francis DeVanna; grandchildren, Gerry, Michelle, Tom, Chis, Dan, Kyle, Eryn, Kara, Lindsay, Jill, Randy, Ryan, Ross, Reid and Rachel; great-grandchildren, Arianna, Avery, Emily, Tyler, Bob, Katie, Olivia, Brooke.
The family will receive visitors at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road on Monday, June 14, 2010 from 2 p.m.-9 p.m. and where a Prayer Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday at Good Shepherd Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. Family will begin greeting friends in the church at 9:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
The family wishes that any memorial contributions be made to FBO Maddie Cherry Fund, c/o 5th Third Bank. Maddie is a 12 year old relative recovering from Guillain-Barre.
Kay'™s family expresses their gratitude to Dr. Jeff Moludy, Dr. David Smith, 5th floor Palliative Care Unit for their support and kindness, and Fr. Jim Bacik for his compassionate pastoral care.
