Obituary

Lawrence Havens Smith joined his loving mother, Essie, and father, Webb, and brother, Homer, in heaven on Wednesday, August 17, 2005, at the home of his daughter, Kimberly, surrounded by his loving family. Larry was born in Fremont, Ohio, on October 3, 1912, and lived on the family farm with his surviving siblings, Ruth Pevler, Marjorie Smith, and Webb Smith Jr. He attended Tiffin College majoring in business. He proudly served our country during World War II as an Army Air Corps Master sergeant. He met and married his beautiful wife of 61 years, Alice Trepanier, while stationed at Chanute Field outside of Chicago. They were married in Kankakee, Illinois, on May 14, 1944, just before he was shipped overseas. He was stationed on the island of Guam and always wished to return one day. While serving his country as a map maker, his first child was born, a son, Lawrence Havens Smith II. After returning home from the war, Larry continued his career as a salesman for Graphic Arts, Inc. He later formed his own company, Printing Plates Inc. After many years, he went to work for Sidell, Ferris, and Clark, and ended his career with Toledo Engraving. As a member of The Kiwanis Club, he always enjoyed the luncheon meetings with his business friends and associates. Larry and Alice raised their children in South Toledo, and later built a house in Oregon to be closer to their cottage on Long Beach. They particularly enjoyed having a boat and went fishing. They would live at "the lake" all summer and only return when school started. Larry is survived by his children, Lawrence (Sue), Barbara Fisher (Denis), Pamela Smith-Weintraub (Alan), and Kimberly Sloan (Jack); grandchildren, Lisa Gildon (Matt), Kelle Shiflett (Jamie), Scott and Kelli Fisher, Teia Semrock, Tyler, Lawrence, and Peyton Sloan; great-grandchildren, Max, Michael, and McKenna Gildon, Owen and Jackson Shiflett, and soon to be born great-grandbaby, Fisher. For the last 25 years, Larry and Alice have made their home in Palmetto, Florida, where they lived in Leisure Lake Village. They both participated in the parks activities such as crafts, dances, and cruises. Larry served on the parks board as treasurer for many years. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Hawaii and their 55th anniversary with a surprise party given by their children. Visitation will be on Sunday, August 21st, from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Oregon Chapel on South Coy Road. The funeral service will take place on Monday, August 22nd, at 1 p.m. at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Oregon Chapel, with visitation one hour prior to the service. The interment will immediately follow the service at St. Ignatius Cemetery on Stadium Road in Oregon, Ohio. The family wishes to thank the many people from Comfort Keepers, both here in Toledo and Palmetto, Hospice of Northwest Ohio. and Health Services Connection for their devotion and caring concern. A special thank you goes to Fathers Mike Dandurand and David Reinhart for their prayers and visits. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Erie Shores Council Boy Scouts of America, or the American Lung Association. Thanks Dad/Papa for all the memories...as through them you will always be a part of us, your loving family. Every day is a gift and you were a gift to us every day. I will not be afraid Because there will always be A beacon of light to guide my way It shines from depths never Reached before So take my hand and we will go Exploring places and thoughts Not imagined or possible ever before. Visitation: Visitation Times Sunday, 2-5 & 7-9 pm Oregon Chapel
