Lewis Edward Wagner, 82, of Oregon, Ohio passed away Thursday, April 17, 2008 at the Lutheran Home at Toledo Assisted Living surrounded by his loving family. Whitey was born in Toledo on May 7, 1925 to Lewis F. and Eleanor S. (Miller) Wagner. He was a WWII U.S. Merchant Marine veteran. Whitey and his father, started the E. S. Wagner Company in 1947, and laid the ground work for what has become one of the major heavy highway construction companies in this part of the country, with offices in Oregon, Ohio and Greenville, South Carolina. The company has been under the leadership of his son, John since his retirement over 20 years ago.
Whitey was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved the Great Lakes and outdoors. He was a member of First St. John Lutheran Church, the Cedar Point Gun Club, C.I.Y.C., Ohio Operating Engineers and active with Ducks Unlimited.
Surviving are his loving wife of 58 years, Phyliss J. (Bodi); children Lewis John (Alicia) Wagner, Susan J. (Sukhjit "Sarge") Purewal, Peggy (Steven) Torda, Beth Ann (David) Hodges, Stacey (Brian) Zwiebel; grandchildren, John C. Wagner, Kellie M. Torda, Justin D. Silcox, Andrew D. Hodges, and Benjamin E. Hodges. Whitey was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Elizabeth Morrison.
Visitation will be held at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road on Saturday from 4 pm- 8 pm and on Sunday from 2pm-8 pm. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 21, 2008 at First St. John Lutheran Church, 2471 Seaman Street, Toledo, at 11:00 a.m. and where the family will greet friends one hour prior. Interment will follow in Williston Cemetery. Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy in Whiteys memory are asked to consider First St. John Lutheran Church or the Lutheran Home at Toledo.
