Lila Lee Altenbaugh, 75, of Oregon, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Toledo Campus.
Lila was born on December 5, 1950, in Toledo, Ohio, to Eldon and Geraldine (Phillips) Mottmiller. She was a graduate of Clay High School and worked as a custodian at Starr Elementary for more than 30 years before retiring. Over the years, she became a familiar and caring face to so many students and staff.
Lila was one of those people who never met a stranger. She loved people, and people loved her. She could walk into just about anywhere and run into someone she knew. Even a quick trip to the grocery store could take much longer than expected because Lila always had someone to stop and say hello to. She always had time for a conversation and truly enjoyed catching up with the people in her life.
She had a way of making people feel comfortable and welcome. Lila cared about people and made friends wherever she went. She never seemed to meet anyone she couldn't find something to talk about with. Her kindness, warmth, and genuine love for others are what so many people will remember most about her.
Lila married her loving husband, Robert Altenbaugh, and together they raised their family and made many wonderful memories. She enjoyed playing Bunco, bowling, and traveling, especially taking family vacations. Some of her happiest times were simply being together with the people she loved.
Her grandchildren, Mason and Nevaeh, held a very special place in her heart. She loved spending time with them and watching them grow. They brought her so much happiness and gave her countless memories that her family will treasure forever.
Lila was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She had a big heart and gave her love freely. She was always there to listen, talk, laugh, or simply spend time with the people she cared about. She had many friends throughout her life, and each friendship was special to her.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Robert and Icee Altenbaugh; grandchildren, Mason and Neveah; sister, Ida (Dennis) Mottmiller-Cremean; nephew and godson, Ried Mottmiller-Cremean; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eldon and Geraldine Mottmiller; her loving husband, Robert Altenbaugh; her brother, Eddie Mottmiller; her beloved Charlie Marks; and her best friend, Jean.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Rd., from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with an additional hour of visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park.
Lila will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all the people whose lives she touched. There will be many people who think of her when they are out running errands, remember a conversation they shared with her, or smile when they think about the way she always stopped to say hello.
She was a woman who loved deeply, cared genuinely, and always had time for people. She never met a stranger, and she never let anyone feel like one for long. Her family and friends will carry her memory with them and be grateful for all the love, laughter, and memories she gave them.
Lila loved everyone, and she made sure everyone knew they were loved. She will be forever missed and forever loved.
