Louis J. Kovacs, 86, of Oregon, and formerly of Birmingham Neighborhood, passed away Saturday, June 4, 2005, in his home surrounded by his loving family. Louis was born in Bellaire, Ohio, on August 4, 1918, to Louis and Susie (Morvai) Kovacs. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving his country during WWII in Italy with the 91st Infantry Division. Louis was sent to Hungary as an interpreter after the war, where he was referred to as the "Chocolate Soldier" because of giving candy to the children in the village of Alsoszuha, Hungary. On July 20, 1959, he married Juanita J. Spicer. Louis owned and operated Kovacs Sohio Service on the corner of Front and York St. for 10 years, and later worked as a glassworker with LOF for 30 years, retiring in 1980.
Louis was a lifetime and active member of Calvin United Church of Christ, helping make Kolbasz with other parishioners. He was also a member of the VFW 4906 Birmingham Post, Hungarian Reformed Federation, Hungarian Club, and also was a mason for over sixty-years with the Paragon Lodge.
Surviving are his loving wife of 46 years, Juanita Kovacs, RN; children, Suzanne Greer, Louis S. (Susan), Marlene J. (Timothy) Plank, Karen J. (Martin) Howard; sister, Irene (Steven) Gall; 17 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Louis was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Helen Soltis.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-9 p.m. at the Eggleston-Meinert-Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road at Starr Ave., and where VFW services will be held at 7:30 p.m.. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at Calvin United Church of Christ, where the family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in North Oregon Cemetery. Memorial donations in Louis's memory may be given to Calvin United Church of Christ. The family wishes to extend special thanks to Rev. Edwin Heilman and Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their loving care.
