Louis R. Shultz, age 82, of Oregon, Ohio, passed away December 3, 2012 at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center. He was born January 29, 1930 on a farm outside of New Riegel, Ohio to Clarence A and Martha B (Lucius) Shultz. He went to St. Mary'™s grade school and Calvert High School before leaving at age 17 to join the U.S. Navy in order to support his family. He served his country for 3 years on a destroyer, aircraft carrier and a submarine while traveling the world. Shortly afterwards he went to work on several Great Lake vessels, retiring with American Steamship Company on the American Republic after 47 years of service. He enjoyed traveling until several health issues kept him home. He liked working on anything that needed fixing even when he had to rig up parts of his own with it most always working in the end. His love was for the water and lighthouses. He built eight lighthouses himself, all after his famous Marblehead. He was very proud of the ones lighting his own yard. He loved animals including his Miniature Schnauzers Be-Be and Pepper-Anne as well as a pet squirrel that would wait by his back door for a peanut each morning. He made pets out of all animals even the black bird that broke its leg and would stay in his yard following him around waiting for a handout.
Louis is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, LaDonna; five children: Richard A (Denise) and Steven C (Jan) Shultz both of the Cleveland, Ohio area, Martha J (Glenn) Thompson of Toledo, Ohio, Edward C (Lynn) Shultz of Wheaton, Illinois and Junanne C (Paul) Knott of Wilmington, North Carolina, 18 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and six brothers and siblings, Rita Schmidtz, Barbara (Don) Roberts, Nancy (Paul) Kanney, William Shultz, Robert (Mary) Shultz and Betty (Martin) Finley all of the Tiffin, Ohio area.
