Obituary

On Thursday, May 29, 2014, Lucy 'œSmokey' Napier entered the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Lucy was born May 2, 1950 in Toledo, OH. She was the daughter of Betty (Halstead) Vicary and the late Kenneth Vicary. Lucy was a retired mail handler for the US Postal Service. An avid animal lover from the time she petted the family'™s first dog, she had numerous pets throughout her life. Horses were her favorite, but dogs and cats didn'™t take very distant second or third places. Smokey owned, rescued, or nursed any and all kinds of domestic and wild animals-including an owlet, a skunk, and a boa constrictor she purchased during a high school choir trip. (And no, the choir chaperons were NOT excited to have a baby boa-though caged-in the bus all the way back from Columbus to Toledo.) Creative, artistic, and brilliant, Smokey could and would tackle almost any project. She could draw, do macramé, quilt, sew, and cook delicious dishes. She took violin lessons as a child, but excelled at the piano, keyboard, guitar, and banjo, all instruments she taught herself to play. She could sing and would perform karaoke with songs such as 'œIf My Nose Was Running Money, I'™d Blow It All on You' at a moment'™s notice. Fun-loving and quick to laugh, she made friends easily and was true and loyal to anyone she called friend or family. Since moving to Louisa, Kentucky several years ago with Larry, her husband of 47 years, the two of them have been active members of Smokey Valley Enterprise Baptist Church. Both participated in numerous ministries of the church. Together they both wrote and directed the church'™s annual Vacation Bible School, including building elaborate sets. Smokey loved the Word of God and lived her Christianity boldly and without apology. Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband, Larry, her children, Larry J. Jr. (Christine), Lois (Greg) Cox, and Laura Vargo. She is survived by her mother, her sister, Kathy (Mark) Douglas, and brother, Ken (Trudy) Vicary. Smokey'™s grandchildren Larry (L.J.), Amanda, Jessica (Calvin) Thogmartin, Christopher Ferree, Kaitlyn Cox, and Brittany Nowakowski and step-grandchildren Megan, Michael, and Austin Liangos also survive her, as do her three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 2 from 2-8 pm at Eggleston-Meinert-Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S Coy Rd, Oregon, OH. A celebration of Smokey'™s life will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 3 at noon with Pastor Larry Carey officiating. Interment will follow at Willow Cemetery.
