Obituary

Magdalene "Baba" Judith Ujvági, loving mother of five children and seven grandchildren, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on July 15, 2021. Baba was born on April 24, 1953 in Budapest, Hungary. She was the fourth child born to Ede and Magda Ujvági, and the first girl in many generations, resulting in joyful celebrations in the small apartment where the family lived on Bécsi street. When the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 erupted in Budapest, she emigrated to the United States with her parents and three older brothers. After a brief stay in a refugee camp in Austria, the family settled in the Birmingham neighborhood of Toledo, Ohio. Baba was young when she left her home in Hungary, but her love for her Hungarian heritage was evident throughout her life. She enjoyed listening to Hungarian music while cooking Hungarian meals, not only for her family, but for the many visitors who stopped by the house. She founded the Magyar Dancers Hungarian folk dance group at Calvin United Church of Christ that was invited to perform at the inaugural event in Washington DC in 1997. She spent many years involved in the Hungarian Club of Toledo, leading numerous children's and cultural programs, and with the Birmingham Ethnic Festival, curating the annual Cultural Center display about Birmingham's roots and traditions. Baba returned to Hungary many times, including for a year with her husband, Imre, and five children, so that their children could know and appreciate their Hungarian roots firsthand. When the family moved from Toledo to Ligonier, PA, Baba dedicated much of her time focusing on cultural programs at Bethlen Communities. Baba was an artist, and briefly attended the University of Toledo as an art major. She loved to hand-paint pumpkins and gourds in the fall, ornaments around Christmas, and Hungarian eggs in the spring. Her artistic ability was also reflected in her garden, where she enjoyed nurturing vegetables, flowers (especially her poppies), and even encouraged the dandelions to grow. While she could have sold her art, she preferred gifting her work to family, friends, and even strangers. In December, her ornaments can be found hanging on Christmas trees throughout the country, and during the Obama administration she was invited to paint Hungarian folk art-inspired Christmas bulbs to adorn a White House Christmas tree. Baba met Imre A. Bertalan in Toledo while he was working as a community organizer in Birmingham. The pair fell in love and married in Toledo in November 1980. Their wedding was attended by over 1000 people, a testament to the love they gave to their community and to each other, which was evident throughout their marriage and an example Baba embodied in the years after Imre's passing. Baba and Imre had five children together, Sára, Magda, Juli, Gitti, and Imre. Among numerous callings, Imre spent much of the children's childhood as Pastor of Calvin United in the neighborhood and Baba welcomed many nieces and nephews and their friends into her home daily. Above all, Baba loved her children and grandchildren. One of her greatest desires was to provide her children with roots to grow strong and wings to go out confidently into the world. She held them close for every scratched knee or heartache, and as the years went on she celebrated every minor victory and major milestone. With the birth of each new grandchild her strength was renewed and she took great joy in being a "Namama". Those who loved Baba know that she fought a long battle against cancer and subsequent illnesses that threatened to take her life almost 25 years ago. While we lost our mother, grandmother, sister, and friend too soon, we are thankful for the time we had with her, and grateful for her courage to fight to live a full life with us for as long as she did. Baba is survived by her four siblings: Charles (Diana), Ed (Cathie), Peter (Betty), and Bernadette; her five children, Sára (Jeff), Magda (Jose), Juli (Dylan), Gitti (Brian), and Imre (Erica), her seven grandchildren, Vince, Alma, János, Jaxson, Mateo, Ima, and Barnabás, and numerous nieces, nephews, and close friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ede and Magda Ujvági, and her husband, Imre A. Bertalan. A memorial will take place at Calvin United Church of Christ in Toledo, Ohio on August 14th at 10:30 am, with visitations starting at 9:00 am. A luncheon will follow at the Hungarian Club of Toledo. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hungarian Club of Toledo and Calvin United Church of Christ. Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
