Obituary

Mahlon 'œRex' LaPountney went home to his heavenly Father and Savior, April 5, 2011. Rex, as he preferred to be called, lived at The Darlington Rehabilitation Home since May 2010. This past year Rex enjoyed his many neighbor residents and the staff at Darlington. Many shared their time and friendship. Rex was a man of the streets and suffered from broken physical and mental health. Liver cancer took him down too quickly. Rex'™ most evident gift was the ability to respect and love people even though that love and respect wasn'™t always returned. Rex was often seen at St. Clair Village doing small chores such as sweeping and watering the flowers. His favorite place was the Down Town Latte Coffee House. The original owners, Connie and Pam, would often provide hot coffee or hot chocolate. Rex treasured their friendship. Just last week on April 1, Rex had his last lunch at the Coffee Shop. As a friend Rex was quite the storyteller. His obvious knowledge of current events and subtle intelligence would pop up at the most unexpected times. Rex had a 'œwandering' eye and loved it when people referred to him as 'œEvil Eye' He loved leather and Indian jewelry. He was concerned for the environment and homeless people like he himself had been. Rex was quick to forgive and to apologize. He was a good man who wanted so much to live a full life. Rex fought the tough battle in exemplary style. Rex is survived by his parents, William LaPountney and Kathleen Smith; mother, Carol LaPountney; sisters, Kim Weaver and Paige (Marty) Vaughn and; and his many friends at St. Clair Village. Bud, Kathy and Julie Steingraber were his special friends for several years. Friends may visit at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road on Thursday, April 7, 2011 from 11 a.m. until the time of the Memorial Service at 12 Noon. Expressions of sympathy in Rex'™s memory can be made to the Cherry Street Mission, St. Paul'™s Community Center or the Toledo Warehouse Association.
