Our earthly "Angel," beloved wife, cherished mother, devoted grandmother, loving great grandmother and great-great grandmother Margaret Babarcsik, age 98, is now dancing in
heaven with her husband of 70 years, John Babarcsik. Margaret passed peacefully in her sleep on April 6, 2021.
Margaret was born on December 15, 1922 to Steven and Sophia (Kocsar) Potoczky in Janik, Czechoslovakia. Margaret's soulmate John Babarcsik courted her in Janik where they met in their teens. Happily, they married on January 31, 1942. John's desire to return to his American
birthplace came to fruition in 1947 when he had both Margaret and their two-year-old daughter Emma, flown to the United States. In 1956, Margaret and John were blessed with another daughter, MaryAnn. Margaret was a loving wife and mother whose sole interest was her family. She loved to cook Hungarian specialties like chicken paprikas, pigs in the blanket, palacsinta, (crepes), nut rolls and the family birthday favorite Dios torte cake.
Besides doting on her family, Margaret was also very religious. She was a member of St. Stephens Catholic Church and the Rosary and Altar Society. There was never a meal at home or at a restaurant when prayers were not said fi rst. Margaret instilled her Catholic faith in her daughters more by example than by dialogue. Besides her faith, Margaret was an ardent advocate for education. Though her own schooling in Europe ended with high school, she wanted her daughters to receive the best education possible. Margaret herself attended night school to learn about America's history in order to become a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1968. Personally, Margaret had a keen sense of fashion and grooming. Though she never worked outside of her home or drove a car, Margaret always had her hair done, her makeup on, and her clothing and jewelry coordinated to begin her day. Margaret was an inspiration and role model to her family. Margaret was also a devoted grandmother who loved to babysit her grandchildren and made certain their favorite toys were available. As they
grew, Grandma Margaret's food became their obsession... especially her roast beef and mashed potatoes. Later, she could be seen cheering them on in their athletics or dance recitals or their school activities. Margaret and John's legacy continued as the family grew and great grandchildren and a great-great grandchild offered them even more joy. After 70 years and spanning two continents, the love of Margaret's life, John, passed away in 2012. At that time, they had been residing at Genacross Lutheran Village Wolf Creek Campus. While living at Genacross from 2012 to the present, Margaret's Alzheimer's never altered her sweet and loving personality. Margaret always had a smile and often told her nurses, aides, or residents how "pretty, beautiful, or handsome" they were. Margaret was even voted by the staff and residents to be their Valentine Queen one year because of her kindness and caring towards
everyone. Margaret enjoyed living at Genacross and participated in many arts and crafts. Her favorite activity was painting. Margaret was so intent on her brush strokes that afterwards she would say, "Did I do that painting?" Now, those lovely little canvas paintings are greatly cherished. Gracious till the end, a beautiful woman and loving mother, whom her
daughters called "their Angel," and Margaret was her family's true blessing. Her family sincerely appreciates the wonderful care that Margaret's nurses, aides and others had given her. They took special care to make sure she was dressed in her coordinated clothing, jewelry, and scarves every day for 11 years, making her feel like the beautiful woman she was. In Margaret's final weeks, Southern Care Hospice was a tremendous comfort
to her and her family. Thank you to all Margaret's caregivers. You are truly appreciated. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents and loving husband John J. Babarcsik. Left to cherish her memory are her loving daughters, Emma (George) Oravecz, MaryAnn (Jerry) Wright; grandchildren, Francis John (Wednesday) Szollosi, Matthew Aaron (Melanie) Szollosi, Victoria Nicole Wright (Tom Essig), Kristin (Trace) Meyer, David Oravecz, Carolyn Oravecz and special friend Katie Nadler; ten great-grandchildren; Midshipman Lucas Babarcsik Szollosi (USNA), Sofi a, Iszabel, Alessandra, Audrey, Addison and Ross Szollosi, George and Katie Meyer, Candace Janson and great-great granddaughter Kensleigh Janson, and many relatives and friends.
