Obituary

Mary Alice (Reiss) Riggs, 91, of Oregon, Ohio passed away September 24, 2007 at Orchard Villa surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Tiffin, Ohio and moved to Toledo in 1940. She graduated from Tiffin Columbian High School and married a classmate, Arnold Reiss. They had one son, Robert Reiss. Mary Alice was president of both the P.T.A. and Mother's Club at Riverside School. She was active in founding the Riverside Teen Town. Mary was a scout leader of Troop 73 (both Senior and Intermediates) at the school and with the Libbey Glass Onized Club. She was a member of the Bay View Yacht Club and past President of the auxiliary. Mary was the founder of Sweet Adelines in Toledo in March 1952, chartering the Glass City Chapter the second chapter in Ohio. She also sang with the Seaway City Chapter and the award winning Toledo Seaway Chapter. Over the years she was active in Chapter and Regional offices and sang in many quartets, lastly with the Pride of Toledo Chapter in the top 10 International Championship Chorus.   November 10, 2001 at the annual show at Lourdes College, the Chapter honored her for 50 years membership and Founder with flowers, a pin, trophy and a lifetime membership. There were many other awards including congratulations from the White House. Governor Bob Taft sent congrats and a signed picture along with a replica of the State House. Lynn Olney, House Representative sent a large certificate of congratulations. The County Commissioners sent a large certificate of congrats. Louis Escobar from Toledo City Council presented her with a plaque proclaiming November 10, 2001 as Mary Riggs Day. Then at the Region #17 meeting in Cleveland, she was honored again with roses and a lifetime membership and 50 year pin.   International president Carole Kirkpatrick sent the International 50 year pin and lifetime membership. She was really thrilled with all the honors, doing the things she enjoyed so much. Mary cherished all the joy she and her husband Bubb made at conventions and shows throughout our country, Canada and England with the Sweet Adelines and S.P.E..B.Sg.Sa. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church.   Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Orvil and Ruth Gannon of Tiffin, Ohio; sister, Treva Jean Gillis of Willis, Texas; husband, G.G. Bubb Riggs, Toledo; and beloved son, Robert Reiss. Mary is survived by her daughter-in-law, Judy Reiss; grandchildren, Kristin (Todd) Nowicki, Robert (Angela) Reiss and Korinne (Tom) Roth; brother, Robert (Donna) Gannon, Tiffin, OH, Oville Gannon; loving niece, Lisa Rylander; nephew, Norman (Evelyn) Gannon, Zephyrhills, FL; great grandchildren, Nolan and Tannor and Kolton Nowicki, Megan and Morgan Reiss and Tristan and Taylor Roth. Visitation will be held at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, Millbury Chapel 1111 Woodville Road, on Wednesday from 5-9 pm  and Thursday from 2-9 p.m. where funeral services will be conducted on Friday at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in  Lake Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Visitation: Visitation Times Wednesday, 5-9 p.m. and Thursday, 2-9 p.m. Millbury Chapel
