Mary L. Pirolli, 96, of Oregon, Ohio passed away June 7, 2009 in her home. She was born in Toledo, Ohio on October 5, 1912 to Charles and Mary (Carter) Sweeney. In 1930 at the age of 17 Mary was chosen Toledo's Most Deserving Girl because of her 6 year successful fight to keep her young brothers and sisters out of an orphans' home. She married Albert Pirolli on May 6, 1931, and was married to him for 55 years until he preceded her in death in 1986. Mary was a member of the former Holy Rosary Church, where she belonged to the Altar Rosary Society, St. Ann's Society and was an active volunteer. She was very proud of her Irish heritage.
Surviving are her sons, James (Nancy) and Albert (Paulette) Pirolli; daughters, Mary Catherine Pirolli and Margaret Gibbons; sister, Alma Kagin; 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 1 great great granddaughter, and many nieces and nephews. Mary also was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Wilma Bailey and Catherine Kozina; brothers, Herbert and John Sweeney; and, son-in-law, Jack Gibbons.
Family and friends may visit at the Eggleston Meinert Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 from 2-9 p.m. with recitation of the rosary at 4 p.m. Funeral services will begin in the funeral home on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. and proceed to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 509 Oswald St. for Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Frank Eckart and Fr. Thomas Leyland officiating. Ierment will follow in North Oregon Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Cardinal Stritch High School or the Sisters of Notre Dame.
