Mary Ann Ritzenthaler, 92, longtime resident of Oregon, Ohio, died peacefully on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 in Fairborn, Ohio. Most recently, she lived with her husband, Don, at Emeritus at Fox Run in Fairborn, Ohio. She also wintered in Punta Gorda, Florida. Mary worked in her home, providing a loving home and building lasting memories and traditions for her husband, children, and grandchildren to carry on. She had a green thumb, and the residents of the Toledo Lutheran Home, where she volunteered for over 5,000 hours, would await her flower arrangements from her garden each week.
Mary was born in Toledo, Ohio on February 3, 1921 to Elsie (Miller) and Lawrence Reifert. She married Donald Ritzenthaler on May 17, 1941 at Memorial Reformed Church in Toledo, Ohio. She was an active member of St. Mark Lutheran Church serving as President of Women of the Church, a Catechism and Sunday School teacher, and as a member of the 100th Anniversary decorating committee. She was a charter member of the Lotus Rainbow Assembly, The Spade and Trowel Garden Club, Locke Jr. CCL, and Oregon Library book discussion group. Mary was also active in the Oregon Homemakers, Meals on Wheels, Gray Lady of Red Cross at St. Charles Hospital, and served on the Sun Oil 100th Anniversary Committee. For many years she worked in the Oregon voting booth and was a dedicated Red Cross blood donor. In addition she loved needle work and traveling. She was a 1939 graduate of Toledo Waite High School, and she and her husband traveled worldwide with her Waite High schoolmates as "The Happy Wanderers". She was an associate member of Faith Lutheran Church in Punta Gorda, Florida and an active member of the Womens Guild and the Womens Christian organization. Since 2010, she was a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Enon, Ohio.
Survivors include her husband of 72 years, Donald; children Karen Bennett of Munroe Falls, OH, John (Maureen McCormick) Ritzenthaler of New Carlisle, OH, Steve (Lori) Ritzenthaler of New Carlisle, OH, and Lori Beth Ritzenthaler of Burlingame, CA; grandchildren David Johnson of Phoenix, AZ, John Deem of Huntersville, NC, Gregory (Sheryl) Bennett of Akron, OH, Brad (Amy) Bennett of Stevensville, MD, and Jacob Ritzenthaler of Westerville, OH; great-grandchildren Leslie (Scott) Stevens, Mary Deem, Timothy, Jarrett, Hailey, Samantha, Will, and Stephanie Johnson, and Ethan, Caleb and Camon Bennett; two great-great-grandchildren Ruthie and Luke. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Barbara Ritzenthaler of Maumee, Ohio, and two nephews David and Jim Ritzenthaler and niece Beth Parlette.
Friends may call at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 7128 Stine Road, Enon, OH 45323, on Friday, September 27, after 5 pm with a funeral service to follow at 6 pm or at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road, Oregon, OH on Saturday after 12 noon with a remembrance at 2 pm. Interment in Toledo Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark Lutheran Church, St. Andrew Lutheran Church or a charity of the donor'™s choice.
