Mary S. Schmidt, 101, of Toledo, Ohio passed away on Monday, August 28, 2017 at Lane Park Assisted Living. Mary was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa on March 2, 1916 to Adam and Maria (Stang) Schmidt. Mary was 1 of eleven children that lived on their family farm in Iowa. She married the love of her life, Philip Schmidt in 1945. Mary worked on her family farm and in the factories during WWII in Chicago. She was a life long member of Sacred Heart Church where she worked in the rectory and also volunteered as a playground monitor at Sacred Heart School. One of the many highlights in Mary's life was being surprised at the age of 99 with an 8th grade graduation she never got to attend due to being needed on the family farm. Her children gave her the graduation party she so greatly deserved with robe and motorboard. Her greatest concerns were that no child should go hungry and that every child should get an education. Mary is survived by her children, Carol Thomas, Susan Shasteen, Michael (Kathleen) Schmidt, Raymond (Janiece) Schmidt, Mary Lou (Pete) Rajner, Barb (Mark) Zilio; sister, Ann Haes; brother, George Schmidt; grandchildren, Philip and Jill Thomas, David and Jason Shasteen, Adam and Katie Schmidt, Alexa and Austin Rickard; great-grandchildren, Jordan Thomas and Seth Shasteen. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Philip; daughter, Patricia McLennan; son-in-law, Samuel Thomas; and 8 siblings. The family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Lane Park of Oregon, especially Annette as well as Rosa from Hospice of Northwest Ohio for the compassionate are of their loved one. In accordance with Mary's wishes, services will remain private.
