Mary A. Shank left this world to join her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Monday, August 16, 2021 at Promedica Flower Hospital. Mary was born on February 6, 1932 to David and Marie (Michener) Johnson in Toledo, Ohio. She was raised in East Toledo and graduated from Waite High School. Mary met Levi Homer Shank at Second Baptist Church where she always said she picked him as she sat in the choir loft. They were married February 11, 1951 and spent the first 2 years of their marriage in Virginia where Homer was stationed during the Korean War. After, they returned to West Toledo and raised 5 children where they continued to live for 68 years. Mary was a member of Second Baptist Church for the majority of her life and for the last 25 years, Cass Road Baptist Church. Mary loved music which she expressed by playing the piano and organ and singing in the church choir. She was best known for her beautiful soprano singing voice and was often a soloist at church and requested to sing at other events. Mary loved to teach others about Jesus and was a Sunday School teacher for over 50 years. She served in many leadership roles in the church such as Sunday School Superintendent, President of the ABW Women's Mission Society, Chairperson for the CAB Board and Music Committee and was the Choir Librarian. Mary was a Girl Scout Leader for 18 years and worked in the school library at Whittier Elementary for 10 years. Mary and Homer spent 30 years of retirement traveling throughout the United States, and the world. They spent summers in Port Clinton enjoying camping, fishing, cookouts, fish fries, card games and board games with family and friends. She loved baking, reading books, knitting and plastic canvas art.
Mary is survived by her husband Homer; children, Kathie (Bill) Carlin, Connie Hertz (Hale) Kunerth, Carol (Tom) Sido, James (Brenda) Shank, Karen (John) Peacock; grandchildren: Amy, Angie, Jason, Jestin, Gabe, Bill, Adam, Gavin, Brendan, Erik, Abby, Matt, Keltin, Login, Ashley, Collin and Carly; 29 great grandchildren with the 30th due in September; sisters-in-law, Patsy (Bob) Guthrie and Margaret Shank; along with her beloved dog, Zoey. Preceded in death by her parents; infant son, John Shank; and brothers David, Robert and Harlan Johnson.
The family will receive friends at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road on Thursday, August 19, 2021 from 3:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Funeral services Friday, August 20, 2021 at 10:00 am in Cass Road Baptist Church, 1400 Cass Road, Maumee, where the family will greet friends at 9:00 am.
