Maureen Ward Hammye, 65, of Toledo, Ohio passed away March 9, 2009. She was born in Toledo, Ohio on March 6, 1944 to James and Jane (Banche) Ward. Maureen had been employed as an educational aide for the Oregon Schools. Among her many achievements, Maureen was President of GOAL-Guardian of Angels League which later was absorbed by Lucas County Association for Retarded Citizens. Maureen also was a delegate to the Board of LARC. She worked with Ann Grady on the project that later became the Ann Grady Center. Maureen, Ann Grady, and Mary Ann Michael drew up the plans to build a respite home for their children. The respite home was made into a school for the MRDD students and put to good use. It is now the J. Shuer School plus the home of Challenger project.
Maureen leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 45 years, Paul; daughters, Debra (Gino) Duran, Jane (Darryl) Poindexter; grandchildren, Justin and Elizabeth Weis; great grand daughter, Hailey Rose; brother, Richard (Nancy) Ward. Also left to cherish her memory are her special friends of Gloria, Sharon and Bob, Lori and Mary. Maureen was preceded in death by her parents, beloved son, Patrick; sisters, Mary Ann Walters and Patricia Janusz.
Friends and family will be received at the Eggleston-Meinert-Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road at Starr Ave., on Thursday from 2-9 p.m. with a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will begin in the funeral home on Friday at 9:15 a.m. and proceed to St. Thomas Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Park. Expressions of sympathy in Maureen's memory can be made to the Anne Grady Home. The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses and staff at Bay Park ICU and Hospice of Northwest Ohio for all their wonderful care.
