Maurice Thomas Hogan, 92, a lifelong resident of Oregon, Ohio, passed away on Friday, April 23, 2021, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Maurice, affectionately known as Uncle Morey by his nieces and nephews was born in Toledo, Ohio on September, 22, 1928 to Thomas F. and Blanche I. (Drouillard) Hogan. He was a United States Army Korean War Veteran. He attended St. Louis Elementary School then went on to graduate from Central Catholic High School in 1946. He had worked at his parent's store, Hogan's Grocery and was a meat cutter for Kroger's prior to retuning to school at age 38 years. He received his Bachelor's of Education in 1969 and his Master's Degree in 1974 both from the University of Toledo. Uncle Morey worked as a teacher for the Sylvania School District, being the mathematics department head and where he also was the Head of the Ski Club bringing the membership of 60 students to 320 students in three years. Uncle Morey was also the President of the Sylvania Teachers Union for many years. In May of 1978 he was the recipient of the President's Trophy Award for his work there.
Uncle Morey was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church downtown Toledo, where he sang in the choir and also in the choir at St. Thomas Aquinas for many years. He enjoyed golf, having a hole in one at Whiteford Valley Golf Course. Uncle Morey was a member of the Toledo Ski Club. He also volunteered at Calvin United Church of Christ, helping them make kobalsk. He loved being busy and was always looking for something to repair, especially webbed chairs. Uncle Morey also enjoyed driving around in his corvette. Most of all he will be remembered as a sincere, thoughtful and giving man, always helping others because he wanted to, not for accolades.
Surviving are his niece and primary care giver, Judith LaPorte (Marvin Schroeder), niece, Sharon (Tony) Mastracci; nephew, Joe Hogan, nephew, Nicholas Hogan; niece, Mary Hogan, uncle and "Poppi" to Jadin LaPorte; brother, Larry Hogan; cousins, Elsie Belner and Donna Marie Flory. Also surviving are many other nieces and nephews throughout the United States. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Neil and Janice (Walland) Hogan; nephew, Phillip LaPorte; sister-in-law, Dorothy (Flahiff) Hogan.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 7 from 4-8:00 pm at Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road, Oregon. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 628 Locust and N. Erie Streets, Toledo, Ohio, on Saturday May 8, at 9:30 am where visitation will begin at 8:30 am. Inurnment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
