Maynard 'œSmitty' Smith, 86, longtime resident of the Birmingham neighborhood of East Toledo, most recently of Luther Hills, passed away Monday, June 27, 2011 at Mercy St. Charles Hospital, Oregon.
He was born on August 5, 1924 in Webster Springs, West Virginia. He was raised by his foster parents Wilson and Leona Miller. Smitty was a US Navy veteran of WW II, serving on the U.S.S. Arlington and in Okinawa, Japan. On December 8, 1951, he married Eleanor Bilek, and she preceded him in death on December 5, 2005. He was a longtime member of greater Birmingham VFW Post 4906. For over 50 years, Smitty operated Superior Appliance Repair. He enjoyed fishing, camping, Czech and German music, and reminiscing with friends. His true passion was spending time with his family. Smitty is survived by his son, Thomas (Joyce); and grandchildren, Lauren, Jeff, and Mark Smith.
Friends may call at Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road on Wednesday, June 29th from 2:00-8:00 pm. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 am Thursday in the funeral home. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Honor Flight of Northwest Ohio or St. Mark Lutheran Church.
