Michael A. "Mike" Carr, Sr. crossed the bar January 25, 2017 at Greenbriar Medical Center in West Virginia. Mike was born in the former Mercy Hospital in Toledo on March 18, 1952 to Andrew B. Carr, Jr. and Patricia Ann (Spaulding) Carr. He grew up in west Toledo, attended St. Agnes Grade School, graduated from Central Catholic High School in June of 1970, and in 2007, at the age of 55, Mike graduated from Mercy College of Northwest Ohio. His life was identified with public service. Immediately after high school graduation he entered the United States Coast Guard. While in the Coast Guard, he served ashore and afloat as a Hospital Corpsman on four Coast Guard Cutters from Michigan to Alaska and Greenland. He earned numerous awards, medals, and citations. In 1983 he was selected as the Health Benefits Advisor of the year, the first member of the uniformed services to be selected for that honor. After twenty years of active duty in the Coast Guard he retired as a Chief Petty Officer; he later joined the Ohio Naval Militia and served as Master Chief Hospital Corpsman and the Command Master Chief.
In 2002 Mike joined the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and maintained his active membership in the auxiliary until his passing. He held numerous offices the Coast Guard auxiliary including Division Staff Officer, Vice Flotilla Commander, Flotilla Commander, Division Captain, and Assistant District Staff Officer. In April 2008 he was the Team Leader for the USCG Auxiliary translation (French) team assigned to the African Partnership Station in Dakar, Senegal, West Africa. This was the first time in history that the Coast Guard Auxiliary was detailed to the US Navy for an overseas operational mission. Mike served on the USCG Task Force to the National Boy Scout Jamboree in 2005 and 2010. He was a life member of the DAV, American Legion, National Rifle Association, and the USCG Sea Veterans of America. Mike was proud of his long affiliation with the Republican Party. His former affiliations include Valley of Toledo Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite and the Zenobia Shrine.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his only son, Michael Jr.; his youngest sister, Linda J. Herman. He is survived by his wife, "Mickey" Michelle; sister, Rebecca (Charles) Stachowiak; daughter, Jennifer (T.J.) Fulwider; daughter-in-law, Emily Carr; grandchildren, Emma and Ayden Carr, Tyler, Jacob and Tanner Fulwider.
Friend may visit at the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, 440 S. Coy Rd., on Monday, January 30, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with military and Masonic services starting at 6:30 p.m. As per his final wishes, he will be cremated and his ashes dispersed by the US Coast Guard and the Coast Guard Auxiliary at a later date.
