Obituary

Nelle Louise (Sipe) Larson (born 1919) died Monday, September 10th, 2007 in Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg. She was a lifelong Eastsider, fiercely proud of its history and devoted to its children.   She attended Raymer Elementary School and graduated from Waite High School in 1936. As the highest-ranking girl, she was awarded a scholarship to UT for one year, and then worked in the Education office to earn her remaining tuition.   Nelle began her teaching career in Monclova, and then moved to Navarre Elementary. She taught fifth grade and junior high there for 25 years before moving to the new East Toledo Junior High as a chairman of the English Department. She retired in 1979 but continued to substitute teach for many more years. She was a consummate educator who loved her students and kept in close touch with many for years afterward. In April of this year, she was greatly honored to be named an Educator of the Year by the East Toledo Family Center.   In 1939 she married Donald Larson. They enjoyed travel to the entire 48 continental United States. She was thrilled to be able to visit Hawaii with her son and daughter-in-law in 2002. She and Don had made many friends both north and south. They owned a cottage on Lake Huron near Southampton, Ontario and spent winters in Panama City Beach, Florida for over 20 years. Wherever Nelle went, she found libraries to support and found friends to share her love of handwork. Every family member and special friends were fortunate to receive one of her hand-knitted Christmas stockings. She also supported her husband's interest in collecting s heet music, and created a program she offered to organizations about the history of music and musicians from Toledo. She was active in the East Toledo Historical Society, Alpha Delta Kappa (an international sorority for female educators), Lotus Chapter of the Eastern Star, Friends of Locke Branch Library, and the Feed Your Neighbor program. She was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, and until recently, she served as a mayoral appointee on the Toledo Historical Commission. She also served as a volunteer in the Panama City Library and helped with political campaigns. Perhaps the hobby that's most added spice to her life (and filled every nook and cranny of her house!) was the collection and display of over 5000 sets of salt and pepper shakers. In her later years, she used these sets to present programs using her vast collection to highlight historical and anecdotal information. Coffee with friends, crossword pu zzles, cards, word games and any time spent near water watching sunsets or moon rises filled her life with pleasure.   Her husband of 62 years Donald, her parents Dale and Abigail Sipe, and her sister June DeLauter preceded Nelle in death. She is survived by her sister Joanne Parks; her children Dennis (Annarose) Larson, Darla Holycross (Ed Rhue), Lars Larson and Linda (Tom) Calcamuggio; 8 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.   Visitation will be held at the Eggleston-Meinert-Pavley Funeral Home on Coy Road and Starr Ave. with the family present on Thursday, September 13, 2007 from 2-9pm. Services will be held on Friday at 11am in the funeral home. Interment will follow at Lake Township Cemetery.   The family requests that memorials be in the form of gifts to the Waite High School Scholarship Fund, the Toledo Public Library, the Old News Boys or a charity of the donor's choice. Visitation: Visitation Times Thursday, 2-9 p.m. Oregon Chapel
