Norman Lee Schiffler, 77, of Northwood died Wednesday, January 8, 2003 in the Orchard Villa Nursing Center after a bout with cancer. Born November 8, 1925 to Joseph and Zella Schiffler, he was the fourth of five children, Charlotte, Joseph Jr., Paul and Donald.
Norman married twice in his lifetime and had two children, Stephen (Sharon) of Port Charlotte, Florida previously of Oak Harbor and Becky Brown of Oregon, OH. He is survived by three granddaughters, Nicole Hunyor of Toledo, Amy Jo Coleman of Orlando, Florida and Sabrina Kroeger of Fremont, Ohio. Also surviving are four great
grandsons and sister, Charlotte Grundstrom of Ocala. He is preceded in death by all three of his bothers and his wife Evelyn (Nowakowski) who passed away November 8, 1993.
His life accomplishments include sailing lake freighters, serving in the US Army in Italy during World War II, and retiring from AP Parts with 33 years of service. For 23 years Norm was head of the Union as UAW chairman and vice chairman. Norm jump started the AP Federal Credit Union by negotiating payroll deductions for members and still held account number one. Norm also coached pee-wee baseball for five years in Northwood. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing and boating. He was a member of the East Toledo YMCA since 1986 and an active member of the East Toledo Senior Activites since 1994.
Friends may call in the Eggleston-Meinert Funeral Home , Coy Road Chapel, 440 S. Coy Road at Starr Ave. where visitation will be Friday from 7 to 9 pm and Saturday from 2 to 5 pm. Funeral services and interment in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park will be private.
